PART 1

Mafia boss Bennett Hale thought the young maid in his mansion was only there to clean, until he came home early and found her crying beside his dying mother, gently shaving away the last of her hair.

Then his mother looked him in the eye and revealed why Juliet had really come into their lives, and suddenly everything Bennett thought his power and money had bought him meant nothing.

I came home early on a Wednesday expecting silence.

Instead, I heard my mother laughing.

That alone stopped me.

Eight months earlier, Eleanor Hale had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer. Since then, I’d hired specialists, private nurses, nutritionists, and medical coordinators.

Whatever she needed, I paid for it.

I thought that made me a good son.

Then I reached her bedroom.

Through the half-open door, I saw Juliet Reed, one of my housekeepers, kneeling beside my mother’s wheelchair.

Juliet was crying.

In one hand was an electric razor.

Silver strands of my mother’s hair covered the towel around her shoulders.

“I’m almost finished,” Juliet whispered.

Mother squeezed her hand.

“Stop talking to me like I’m five.”

Juliet laughed through her tears.

“You’re being terribly difficult.”

And my mother smiled.

Not the brave smile she gave doctors.

A real one.

I quietly walked away.

The next morning, I summoned Juliet to my office.

“You were hired to clean this house.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Then why are you caring for my mother?”

She hesitated.

“Because she was scared.”

I stared at her.

“She has nurses.”

“They monitor her condition,” Juliet replied. “That’s not the same as sitting beside someone when they think they might die.”

The words irritated me because I knew they were true.

Juliet told me about nights my mother couldn’t sleep.

About the hair falling onto her pillow.

About the tea she liked when nausea became unbearable.

Things happening under my own roof.

Things I knew nothing about.

Then the office door opened.

My mother rolled inside.

“That girl,” she said, pointing at Juliet, “has treated me more like family than anyone in this house.”

My chest tightened.

“Mother, I’ve given you the best care money can buy.”

Her expression hardened.

“Exactly, Bennett. You gave me money.”

Silence.

“Juliet gave me her time.”

I couldn’t answer.

Then Mother reached for Juliet’s hand.

“If you fire her, I’m leaving with her.”

“No one’s being fired.”

I thought that ended it.

It didn’t.

Mother looked at me for several seconds, then said quietly:

“There’s something you need to know about Juliet.”
