PART 3

For a moment, the courthouse hallway disappeared.

The polished floor, the buzzing fluorescent lights, the attorneys speaking in clipped voices, the people moving in and out of courtrooms with folders pressed to their chests—all of it receded until there was only Arthur’s face and the impossible sentence he had just spoken.

Your mother was legally married to Richard’s father before she married yours.

Daniel was the first to move.

He stepped closer, his voice low. “That can’t be right.”

Arthur’s eyes remained on me. “I haven’t seen the original yet. Only a photograph sent from the investigator at the townhouse. But it appears authentic enough that we need to treat it seriously.”

I heard my own voice from far away. “What was his father’s name?”

“Charles Vance.”

My stomach turned.

Vance.

I had carried that name my entire life, believing it came from my father’s side, from the business my parents built, from the sign above the workshop door and the labels sewn onto handmade chairs.

Vance Home Furnishings.

But Richard was a Vance too.

I had always known it as coincidence.

My father once joked that it was fate the day I brought Richard home.

Now that memory felt different.

Daniel shook his head. “Mom would have told us.”

“Maybe she tried,” I whispered.

The thought landed softly, but it shook me harder than panic would have.

My mother, Grace Vance, had been a woman of careful drawers and labeled boxes. She kept birthday candles in glass jars, warranty cards in alphabetical folders, and old family photographs wrapped in tissue. She believed every object had a proper place and every story deserved a beginning.

If she had hidden an envelope in Richard’s safe, it meant someone had taken it from where she intended it to be.

Or someone had kept it from me on purpose.

Across the hallway, Richard was watching us.

His face had changed again.

Not angry now.

Alert.

When his eyes moved from Arthur to me, I saw recognition. He knew exactly what had been found. Maybe he had always known.

Chloe stood near the far wall with her sister, arms folded tightly around herself. She looked smaller without my grandmother’s necklace, less certain of the life she had chosen and more aware of the rooms Richard kept locked around every truth.

Arthur closed his folder. “We need to leave before anyone tries to pull this into the hallway.”

Richard’s voice cut across the space. “Emily.”

The way he said my name was almost gentle.

That frightened me more than his fury.

Daniel stepped in front of me. “Don’t.”

Richard ignored him. “You don’t understand what you’re touching.”

I held my grandmother’s necklace so tightly the clasp bit into my palm.

“Then I suppose I’ll have to learn.”

His jaw tightened. “Some things are buried for a reason.”

On the first day of our marriage, my husband threw a greasy dishcloth in my face and said, “From now on, you’re my family’s maid.” I smiled, left my wedding ring on the table, and walked out with my suitcase.

“Either you go clean my mother’s apartment right now, or tomorrow I’m asking for a divorce,” my husband snapped. He had been unemployed for six months and was living off my salary. I didn’t argue. I took the keys, walked out silently, and checked a 1,500-dollar bill. What I discovered inside my mother-in-law’s apartment turned his divorce threat against him.
