PART 1

“Emmett paid for that man to marry his daughter because no other man could bear to look at her,” whispered a woman sitting in the front row.

The phrase echoed through the Cathedral of Saint Jude in Minneapolis like a spark, catching every ear in the room. Rosalie Durham heard it clearly from the entrance, surrounded by white flowers, flashing cameras, and two hundred guests who had not come to wish her happiness, but rather to verify if the cruel rumors were true.

At twenty-nine years old, Rosalie was tall, strongly built, and possessed a remarkably steady gaze that refused to drop. A deep wine colored mark covered part of her left cheek and extended down her neck, while near her temple, her hair grew visibly thinner. Since childhood, she had endured nicknames that her own father never stopped, hearing people call her a monster, a disgrace, and the daughter no one would ever choose.

That was precisely why she walked down the aisle without a veil, showing her face openly to the crowd.

Waiting for her at the altar was Manuel Nelson, the sole heir to a family business recently ruined by a massive financial scandal. His father had died after being falsely accused of embezzling company funds, leaving the accounts of Nelson Enterprises frozen while his younger sister had to drop out of university.

Emmett Durham had offered to save Manuel from ruin by paying off his debts, reopening his father’s legal case, and clearing the family name.

In return for this financial rescue, Manuel had to marry Rosalie.

Emmett Durham had offered to save Manuel from ruin by paying off his debts, reopening his father’s legal case, and clearing the family name.

In return for this financial rescue, Manuel had to marry Rosalie.

Manuel held her gaze without flinching and answered calmly. “I have heard a lot of things, but I would rather get to know you before repeating them.”

It was not love, but no one had ever spoken to Rosalie without feigned compassion or cruelty disguised as a joke. That was why she accepted the arrangement, knowing that she desperately needed to escape her father’s house as well.

Her mother, Lorelei, had died twelve years earlier after falling from the veranda of the family lake house in Duluth. The official police report ruled it a tragic accident, but Rosalie had never believed that story. From that day on, Emmett kept her under the strict thumb of paid private doctors, strong sedatives, and constant diagnoses of emotional instability.

The night before the wedding, Rosalie found a small key hidden inside Lorelei’s old sewing box, feeling certain it opened a secret file her father kept locked in his study.

She carefully sewed the small key inside the corset of her heavy wedding dress.

Hours later, two men sent by Emmett burst into her bedroom, grabbing her arms firmly as they searched her drawers while demanding to know what she had taken from the office. Rosalie confessed nothing under their questioning, and the men never thought to search the thick fabric of her wedding dress.

During the formal signing of the marriage document, Emmett placed a heavy hand on his daughter’s shoulder to pose for the news photographers.

Rosalie shuddered so violently that the signing pen fell directly onto the marble floor.

Manuel saw her sudden reaction and noted the tension between them.

That night, at the Pinecrest estate in Saint Paul, a maid found blood staining the back of the white dress. Rosalie locked herself inside her bedroom, adamantly refusing to see her father’s personal physician who had arrived at the house.

Manuel knocked softly on the heavy wooden door to speak with her.

“I will not enter without your permission, but I need to know if you are hurt,” Manuel called out quietly through the door.

After a long silence, the lock finally turned, and the door opened slowly.

Rosalie stood by the bed with her dress unbuttoned, showing where the metal key had pierced through the inner lining and cut her skin. However, that small cut was not what left Manuel completely breathless as he looked at her.

He saw old fading marks around her wrists, painful scars on her ankles, and long pale lines across her back that looked like she had been tied down for days.

“Who did this to you?” he asked softly, kneeling down on the floor so he would not stand over her intimidatingly.

Rosalie pressed her lips tightly together before answering him. “My father did this, along with the doctors he paid to claim everything was for my own good.”

In that moment, Manuel realized he had not married the woman everyone in town called a monster.

He had married the sole survivor of a cruel family that was still actively trying to destroy her life.

Meanwhile, back in his office, Emmett Durham had just discovered that Lorelei’s key was missing from its hiding place.

PART 2

Manuel carefully cleaned the wound on her back without calling any domestic staff to assist him. He asked for her permission before touching the cut, left the bedroom door wide open, and promised that no doctor chosen by Emmett would ever step foot inside the estate again.

Rosalie did not completely believe his promise at first, but it was the very first commitment in her life that did not feel like a veiled threat.

Over the next few weeks, their marriage, which had been constructed purely as a business arrangement, began to subtly transform. Rosalie reviewed the financial accounts for Pinecrest and discovered fraudulent charges that were actively harming the local estate workers. Manuel immediately replaced the corrupt administrator, returned the missing money to the staff, and stood by her management decisions.

When a high end dressmaker from a boutique spoken disrespectfully about hiding Rosalie’s body under thick dark fabrics, Manuel fired the woman on the spot. He later apologized to Rosalie for making that executive decision without consulting her first, letting her choose a new tailor herself.

It was not love between them yet, but it was built on deep mutual respect, which already felt like a absolute miracle to Rosalie.

However, Emmett was still scheming from afar to maintain control.

Dr. Callaway showed up at the front door unannounced, claiming he urgently needed to evaluate Rosalie’s fragile mental health. Manuel firmly rejected the doctor in front of the entire household staff, turning him away at the entrance. Two days later, Naomi, who was Rosalie’s personal assistant, mistakenly drank a cup of hot chocolate meant for her employer and suddenly collapsed onto the floor.

An independent medical professional confirmed that the abandoned cup contained a high concentration of a dangerous sedative.

“It was meant for me,” Rosalie whispered as she stood beside Naomi’s hospital bed, realizing her father never intended to let her live long after the wedding concluded.

That very night, she led Manuel to Lorelei’s private archive room, which had been transferred to Pinecrest according to specific instructions in a secondary will that Emmett could not legally ignore.

Rosalie inserted the small metal key, and the lock turned smoothly.

Inside the chest, they uncovered personal letters, hidden bank statements, and a leather notebook written in a simple household code. Rosalie recognized her mother’s handwriting, quickly realizing that Lorelei had been hiding real money under ordinary domestic expenses, where words like candles represented illegal bribes and repairs meant payments to corrupt local officials.

They spent days sitting together at the desk, deciphering each page of the ledger carefully.

Emmett had spent years systematically draining the substantial inheritance that Lorelei had left specifically for Rosalie, including valuable shares in a timber company, land holdings, and an investment trust that was set to pass to her upon marriage or her thirtieth birthday.

However, the most shocking discovery was tucked inside a blue folder.
