A dark luxury SUV pulled into the station lot first.

Nora saw the vehicle through the glass doors and froze instantly. Violet made a small, choked sound from the floor.

Paul walked straight to the front doors, turned the heavy brass deadbolt, and lowered the interior security latch. Then he guided both girls behind the reinforced front counter, keeping them completely hidden from the parking lot.

The SUV stopped crooked across two marked spaces.

The driver’s door slammed open.

Richard Hayes stepped out holding his smartphone, already talking, already gesturing aggressively toward the building as if he expected everyone inside to jump to attention.

Paul looked once at the sealed evidence envelope, once at the pharmacy printout, and once at the two children crouched beneath his desk.

Then someone pulled hard on the locked glass door.

PART 2

Richard pulled once on the locked glass door.

Then again, harder, rattling the frame.

“Open the door,” he called out, his voice muffled by the thick glass.

Paul stood where Richard could see him clearly, but kept his body positioned so the children remained hidden below the counter line.

Richard pointed a finger through the glass. “My daughters are in there. They’re both sick and they need to come with me right now.”

Paul lifted the desk phone, bypassed local dispatch, and informed the watch commander that the subject of the missing-child report was now outside the front entrance.

Richard’s confident expression tightened. “I prescribed what Violet needed,” he said loudly through the gap in the door frame. “You’re delaying necessary medical treatment.”

Paul picked up the pharmacy printout. “You reported to dispatch that both girls refused their medicine.”

“They did. They panicked and ran off.”

“Nora says you forced Violet to swallow it.”

For the first time, Richard stopped moving.

It was not an overt, dramatic reaction. His face did not collapse. He simply pulled his leather laptop bag closer against his ribs.

That small, instinctual movement told Paul exactly where to look next.

The ambulance arrived, its red lights flashing against the wet pavement without the siren. Two paramedics entered swiftly through the secured side entrance.

The lead paramedic knelt beside Violet on the linoleum floor, speaking in a quiet, reassuring tone. She asked short, simple questions: Where does it hurt? Do you feel dizzy? Do you remember if the liquid tasted bitter?

Violet answered what she could through her tears. When she didn’t know, Nora answered only if the paramedic looked directly at her. Neither girl guessed. Neither girl made up details.

The paramedic checked Violet’s vitals—her heart rate was dangerously low, her pupils sluggish—and prepared her for immediate transport to the pediatric emergency department.

Nora refused to let go of her sister’s hand.

“They stay together,” Paul stated firmly.

The paramedic nodded without hesitation. “Understood. Both ride in the rig.”

Richard heard the exchange through the glass and pounded his fist against the pane. “You can’t take my children anywhere without my consent! I’m a licensed physician!”

Paul stepped toward the entrance, but kept his hand away from the lock. “The children requested police protection,” he said clearly. “Medical evaluation comes first.”

Richard held up his phone as if the screen carried legal authority. “I have the prescription records right here!”

Behind the counter, Nora stood up.

Paul turned, but the seven-year-old was already pointing through the glass at the bag in her father’s hand.

“There’s another syringe in the front pocket,” Nora said. “He put it in a paper towel.”

Richard looked down at his bag.

It was his second critical mistake. His first had been assuming his seven-year-old daughters would be too terrified to speak. His second was confirming, with a single reflexive glance, that Nora knew precisely what was hidden inside his bag.

Paul instructed Richard over the intercom to set the bag on the pavement and step back. Richard refused, backing away toward his SUV.

A second officer stepped through the side entrance, joining Paul in the lobby. Together, they exited through the secured side door, cutting off Richard’s path to his vehicle.

There was no high-speed pursuit. There was no dramatic physical struggle. There was only a heavy leather bag placed on the hood of a cruiser while Richard stood against the vehicle, breathing heavily, insisting that everything inside was private medical property.
