“Oh, Clarissa, honestly. She’s three!”

Chloe pulled harder.

“No, Mommy! I’m not lying. Look.”

I followed the direction of her finger.

At first, I saw only Evelyn’s smooth swimsuit fabric, cut sharply across her waist, exposing pale skin underneath.

Then Evelyn moved.

Beneath the high curve of the cut-out, a faded line of dark ink appeared along her ribs.

It was an old tattoo.

A lighthouse.

The ink had faded into blue-gray. Fine lines shaped a narrow tower surrounded by curling waves.

Beside it sat a tiny smiling sun.

A circle. Seven short rays. Two dots for eyes. One uneven curve for a mouth.

I had seen that sun countless times.

Marcus drew it on shopping lists.

On napkins.

On birthday cards.

On every note he slipped into Chloe’s lunch bag.

I rose too fast.

Something in my voice silenced the yard.

Marcus approached while wiping his hands on a towel.

“What happened?”

I pointed toward Evelyn.

“Why is your drawing on her body?”

Marcus looked.

The towel fell from his hand.

Evelyn stared directly at him.

For one endless second, neither spoke.

My aunt stopped gathering plates.

My father straightened beneath the umbrella.

Someone switched off the music.

Marcus’s face lost its color.

“Please,” he said. “Let me explain.”

It was the worst possible choice of words.

Naturally, it was.

Evelyn wrapped the towel tightly around her waist.

“I don’t know what kind of story you’ve made up in your head.”

“In my head?” My voice sharpened. “My daughter just recognized my husband’s drawing on your body.”

Chloe stood between us, drawing the shape in the air.

“Daddy draws the happy sun.”

Marcus knelt beside her.

“You’re right.”

The admission passed through the guests like cold water.

I stared at him.

He rested one hand on Chloe’s shoulder.

“Before I met you, I volunteered at an arts center downtown.”

“I know that,” I snapped.

He had mentioned weekend classes and community murals.

He had never mentioned Evelyn.

Evelyn tightened the towel around herself.

Marcus looked again at the tattoo.

“There was a program for people recovering from surgery. Local artists helped them design things to cover scars. I’m not a tattoo artist,” he added quickly. “I only sketched.”

Evelyn’s lips parted. “The community room on Willow Street.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Only pieces.”

She touched the lighthouse.

“I remember a young man with paint on his hands.”

My father glanced between them.

“No one knew each other?”

“No,” Evelyn said, barely louder than the water dripping from the pool ladder.

“It was almost 20 years ago.”

Marcus settled back on his heels.

“A woman came in one Saturday and asked everyone to draw something that meant hope.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The party seemed to vanish around us.

No plates rattled.

No children yelled.

Even Chloe became still.

“I had just had surgery,” Evelyn revealed.

Her hand rested over the tattoo.

“I had a tumor removed. The scar ran across my stomach, and I couldn’t look at it without thinking about everything that almost happened.”

My father stared at her.

“You never told me that part.”

“I told you I had surgery.”

“You said it was years ago.”

“It was.”

She looked at him briefly before turning away.

“I did not want to spend the rest of my life introducing myself through the worst thing that had happened to me.”

Marcus rubbed his thumb against his palm.

“I drew a lighthouse because it stands in bad weather without pretending the weather isn’t there.”

Chloe leaned against him.

“And the sun?”

He smiled faintly.

“I put that sun on everything back then too, sweetheart.”

Evelyn examined the tattoo as though she had not truly seen it in years.

“Underneath, he wrote two words.”

She lowered the towel slightly.

Below the lighthouse, nearly hidden beneath the swimsuit seam, faded lettering curved along the scar.

Still Standing.

My father lowered himself back into his chair.

No one was laughing anymore.

The suspicion inside me did not disappear immediately. It slowly began to loosen.

Marcus had been 21.

Evelyn had been using her maiden name.

Years afterward, she married my father.
