But Toby had not said he found it.

He had said it was Mommy’s medicine.

That difference mattered.

Naomi reviewed the chart again.

She traced the timeline from the first reported symptoms to Elijah’s arrival at the hospital.

She compared Cassandra’s statements.

Shrimp.

A sudden allergy.

Confusion caused by lack of oxygen.

Each explanation had arrived only after the previous one weakened.

Elijah approached her in the corridor.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Six months of anger stood between them, but exhaustion had stripped away the polished distance he normally wore.

“Is he going to be okay?” he asked.

“He’s responding to treatment.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“It’s the honest answer I can give you right now.”

Elijah lowered his eyes.

The man who once accused her without waiting for proof now wanted certainty before the proof existed.

Naomi could have pointed out the irony.

She did not.

He looked through the glass at Toby.

“I should have listened to you.”

The words were quiet.

Naomi’s hand tightened around the chart.

This was not the place for the conversation he had denied her six months ago.

Not while his son lay under hospital monitors.

“Your son needs you focused,” she said.

Elijah nodded, but the shame on his face remained.

When Toby woke again, he seemed smaller beneath the blanket.

Naomi entered alone at first.

She checked his oxygen level and listened to his breathing.

The tightness had eased, though he was still weak.

He watched her carefully.

“Is Daddy going to be mad because I told the truth?” he asked.

The question landed harder than any accusation Cassandra had made.

Children rarely asked that unless they had learned that truth could make adults dangerous, disappointed, or angry.

Naomi pulled the blanket higher around his shoulders.

“You did nothing wrong,” she said.

Toby looked toward the glass.

Elijah stood on the other side.

His face changed when he realized his son was watching him.

He lifted one hand, not waving exactly, just letting Toby see that he was there.

Toby’s eyes filled.

Naomi kept her voice steady.

“Your job is to rest. The grown-ups will handle the rest.”

The boy nodded.

Before he closed his eyes, he whispered, “I didn’t want the medicine.”

Naomi did not press him for more.

A frightened child in a hospital bed was not a witness to be pushed until he produced a complete story.

The laboratory results would establish what was in his bloodstream.

The documented statements would establish what had been said.

The bottle would establish whether Cassandra’s explanation matched the substance she carried.

Facts first.

Questions later.

Outside the room, Elijah asked what Toby had said.

Naomi told him only what was appropriate for his son’s care and safety.

Elijah listened with his jaw tight.

Cassandra moved toward them.

“You’re turning him against me.”

Elijah faced her.

“He’s four.”

“Exactly. He repeats things.”

“Who told him to say it was your medicine?”

Cassandra opened her mouth, but no answer came immediately.

Naomi watched the pause.

So did Elijah.

Cassandra recovered by attacking the only target she believed the room might still doubt.

“This is what she wanted,” she said, pointing at Naomi. “She wanted a way back into your life.”

Naomi felt the old humiliation flare.

The accusation had changed shape, but not purpose.

Six months ago, Cassandra had called her a gold digger.

Now she was calling her a scheming ex-wife.

Both stories depended on the same idea: that Naomi’s professional judgment, pain, and dignity were never real, only strategies for getting close to Elijah’s money.

Naomi did not defend herself.

“The results will speak for themselves,” she said.

Cassandra laughed once, sharply.

“You think a lab report makes you powerful?”

“No,” Naomi said. “It makes the facts harder to bury.”

Elijah stared at Cassandra.

The silence between them was no longer the silence of a united couple facing an outsider.

It was the silence of a man beginning to question how many times he had accepted her answer because it was easier than examining it.

The medical director did not return to request a transfer.

The chart remained under Naomi’s care.

The samples remained sealed.

The bottle remained secured.

And Toby’s oxygen level continued to improve.

Near three in the morning, the rain softened.

The windows no longer shook with each gust, and the hall lights reflected in long pale streaks across the wet glass.

Naomi stood at the nurses’ station reviewing another set of readings when the laboratory notification appeared.

The timestamp read 3:12 a.m.

She opened the preliminary report.

The first line made her stop.

She read it again.

Then she moved to the next section, checking the identifiers, the sample number, and the chain-of-custody notation.

There was no ordinary allergy marker that explained the full crisis.

The substance detected in Toby’s blood was not a routine household medication.

It was connected to an experimental drug.

Naomi felt a cold pressure settle beneath her ribs as she continued reading.

The drug was linked to a company Elijah had recently purchased.

She looked through the glass.

Elijah stood beside Toby’s bed, one hand resting on the rail as he watched his son sleep.

Cassandra stood farther back, her arms folded tightly across her chest.

For six months, Elijah had believed Naomi was the person who had entered his life for access to his money and power.

Now a dangerous substance tied to his own business had entered his little boy’s bloodstream.

And the woman who had helped destroy Naomi’s marriage had carried an unlabeled bottle into the hospital.

Naomi closed the report halfway, not because she doubted what she had read, but because the next step had to be exact.

This was no ordinary allergic reaction.

Whatever had entered Toby’s bloodstream connected directly to the company Elijah had just purchased.
