Then Claire’s mother entered the conversation and asked her not to destroy the family over one bad parenting decision.
That sentence stayed with Claire.

Emma stopped apologizing every time she needed something.

She started leaving her backpack by the door because she trusted that someone would still be there when she came back.
For Claire, those moments mattered more than winning any argument with her family.

Claire waited.

Certified letters were delivered to Lauren, Derek, Claire’s parents, and Ryan.

Claire told him to open it.

Lauren opened hers too.
