At the initial hearing, Helene appeared wearing pearls. Markus entered with an arrogant smile. Dr. Kranich looked frightened. They expected influence. Delays. Protection. Instead, federal agents entered the courtroom. The prosecutor stood calmly. “The state is also bringing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, falsifying medical records, and attempted unlawful disposal of a living person.”
Markus jumped to his feet. “This is ridiculous!” The prosecutor pressed a button. Audio recordings filled the room. Dr. Kranich’s recorded voice echoed through the speakers. “The medication will slow her down sufficiently. After cremation, there will be nothing left to examine.” Then Markus’s voice: “And the baby?” Helene replied gently: “Collateral damage.”
The entire courtroom fell silent. Klara sat beside me in the wheelchair, pale but unshaken, one hand protectively on her stomach. Markus looked as if he were going to be sick. Helene never once looked at her daughter. She looked at the reporters. That was what truly terrorized her.
Dr. Kranich was the first to confess. Then everything collapsed. Search warrants exposed financial crimes, forged documents, bribery, and corruption connected to the von Walde family empire. Markus attempted to flee the country on a private jet and was arrested before takeoff. Helene fought the charges for weeks until her empire finally turned against her. Former employees spoke out. Victims came forward. Families she had silenced for years finally had evidence.
Six months later, Klara gave birth to our daughter. We named her Hope. A year later, I stood on the porch of our new house and watched Klara laughing barefoot in the garden while Hope slept peacefully against my chest.
Helene received a life sentence. Markus was sentenced to decades behind bars. Dr. Kranich lost his medical license, his fortune, and his freedom. The von Walde family’s assets were eventually transferred to a trust fund for Klara and Hoffnung.
People later claimed I had destroyed the von Walde family. They were wrong. I merely opened the coffin. The truth was already inside.
