Brenda placed another folder beside mine. “And I’ve started the process of securing support for our four-year-old daughter, Sienna.”

Garrett stared at the legal papers, turning pale. “You’re both suing me?”

“We’re pursuing what our children are entitled to,” I said calmly.

His phone buzzed repeatedly on the table.

“Valerie’s calling,” Brenda noted smoothly. “Well, don’t keep your fiancée waiting.”

Panicked and humiliated, Garrett grabbed his jacket and rushed out of the restaurant, leaving his past and present behind.

When I got home that evening, Liam was waiting for me.

“Mom, why did Mrs. Evelyn have Dad’s watch?”

“I found out, sweetheart.”

“Does Dad know about us?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he come?”

Before, I would have invented an excuse. Not anymore.

“I don’t know. But it wasn’t because of you.”

Liam nodded, then smiled. “Close your eyes!”

When I opened them, a crooked cardboard jewelry box sat on the table. Inside was a handwritten note: ‘Mom, when I grow up, I’ll buy you a real one.’

Tears filled my eyes.

“Mom! It’s supposed to be happy!” Liam said.

“It is,” I laughed, wiping a tear. “I wouldn’t trade it for gold.”

He grinned. “Good. Because I’m eleven and completely broke.”

I laughed and hugged my son tightly, knowing that we were finally free from the shadows of the past.

PART 3

The dining room of the upscale restaurant suddenly felt stifling. Garrett stood frozen, staring at the two stacks of legal documents lying side-by-side on the table. He ran a hand over his face, trying to summon his usual veneer of confidence, but his trembling hands betrayed him.

“Samantha, Brenda… you two are deliberately trying to ruin my life, aren’t you?” Garrett hissed through gritted teeth, his voice tight with suppressed anger. “Do you have any idea how important that partnership at the new firm is to me? If Valerie and her family find out about this…”

“So what?” Brenda interrupted coolly, grabbing her expensive handbag. “Are you afraid of losing that coveted position, or of losing the financial backing of your wealthy fiancée? You used my money to pay your mother’s rent and exploited Samantha’s naivety to dodge your responsibilities as a father. You’re the one who’s destroyed yourself, Garrett.”

“Samantha, say something!” Garrett turned to me, his eyes filled with pathetic pleading. “I know I failed our child. But if you take me to court now, I’ll lose everything! If I go bankrupt, where will the money for Liam’s child support come from?”

I looked straight into the eyes of the man I had once loved—the man for whom I had devoted the best years of my youth. All I saw now was selfishness and fear for his own skin; there wasn’t a shred of genuine remorse for Liam or Brenda’s daughter, Sienna.

“For the past five years, without a single penny from you, I’ve raised our child,” I said firmly, every word clear and decisive. “I stayed up night after night working extra shifts, wearing shoes with holes in the soles, just so Liam would have the books and supplies he needed for school. You never worried about whether your children had enough to eat; you only cared about living a lavish lifestyle. You won’t have the chance to manipulate me ever again.”

Garrett’s phone rang again. The name “Valerie” flashed on the screen. Brenda gave a wry smile and shook her own phone: “I just sent her all the transfer records and copies of the two lawsuits. Have fun explaining yourself to her tonight.”

Garrett’s face drained of color. He hurriedly grabbed his coat—nearly knocking over the chair behind him—and bolted from the restaurant like a man being hunted.

Brenda and I watched his pathetic figure retreat, then instinctively looked at each other. There was no jealousy or animosity between us—just the shared relief of two women who had finally stepped out of the wreckage together.

FINAL PART

The legal proceedings moved faster than I expected. Faced with irrefutable evidence of deliberate asset concealment and child support evasion—combined with pressure from both our lawyers—Garrett was forced to accept every term of the settlement.

To avoid jail time for years of unpaid child support, he had to sell his luxury car, mortgage his property, and divert a large portion of his monthly income directly into accounts for Liam and Sienna. Valerie called off their engagement immediately after that night, and his employer fired him due to the ethical scandal. After secretly moving away out of shame, Evelyn sent a brief letter of apology. I didn’t reply, but I chose to forgive her in my heart—not for her sake, but for my own peace of mind.

On a sun-drenched weekend afternoon, I sat on the lawn chair in the front yard, watching Liam excitedly assemble a giant cardboard castle with Sienna—Brenda’s daughter. Brenda sat beside me, holding two glasses of cold juice. We had become close friends, sharing work and helping each other look after the children.

“Mom! Look at this!” Liam exclaimed, running over to show off a cardboard jewelry box he had meticulously decorated with glittering paper stars. “I reinforced it! It won’t get squashed this time!”

I took the small box from my son, a wave of happiness welling up inside me, leaving me momentarily speechless. My eleven-year-old boy had grown into someone resilient, talented, and deeply affectionate—so unlike his selfish father.

“It’s beautiful, Liam. This is the most precious thing I’ve ever owned,” I said, smiling brightly as I ruffled his hair.

Liam looked at me with innocent yet proud eyes: “From now on, I’ll walk home from school by myself and help you with the housework. I’m a big boy now; I’ll protect you.”

I held him close, breathing in the scent of morning sunshine in his hair. The tears shed over the pain, betrayal, and poverty of the past five years had vanished, giving way to a fierce belief in the future. We started over from the fragments—from an old watch found in a trash bag to a battered cardboard box. Yet, it was from those simple things that a new life, truly peaceful and filled with love, began.
