I MARRIED A HOMELESS MAN TO SPITE MY FAMILY — A MONTH LATER, I WAS SHOCKED BY WHAT I SAW WHEN I CAME HOME.

When I proposed to a homeless man I didn’t know, I thought I had everything planned. It seemed like the perfect deal to please my family without forming any bonds. How could I have known that a month later, when I stepped into the house, I would experience the shock of my life?

I’m Melis, 34 years old; this is the story of how, as a single, career-focused woman, I married a homeless man and how my world was turned upside down in ways I never expected.

For as long as I can remember, my family pressured me to get married. It was as if they had a timer in their heads, ticking like there were seconds left before my hair started turning gray. As a result, every family dinner turned into an unplanned matchmaking session.

My mother, Meral, would begin, “Melis, my dear. Do you remember Mrs. Canan’s son? He’s become a regional manager at his own company. Maybe you should have coffee with him sometime?”

“Mom, I’m not interested in dating anyone right now,” I would say. “I’m focused on my career.”

My father, Süleyman, would interject: “But darling, your career won’t keep you warm at night. Don’t you want someone to share your life with?”

“I share my life with you and my friends,” I would reply. “That’s enough for me for now.”

But they wouldn’t stop. It was always a “How’s that guy?” Or I was under a barrage of “Do you know this good boy?” One night, things really got out of hand.

While we were having our usual Sunday meal, my family dropped a bombshell.

“Melis,” my father said in a serious tone. “Your mother and I have been thinking.”

“Oh no, here we go again,” I muttered.

Ignoring my sarcasm, he continued: “We’ve decided; if you don’t get married by your 35th birthday, you won’t get a single penny of our inheritance.”

“What?” I shouted. “You can’t be serious!”

My mother chimed in: “We are serious. We’re not getting any younger, my dear. We want to see you settled down and happy. And we want to have grandchildren while you’re still at the age to enjoy it.”

“This is crazy,” I stammered. “You can’t threaten me to get married!”

My father insisted: “This isn’t a threat, this is… an encouragement.”

That night, I stormed out of the house, unable to believe what had happened. They had given me an ultimatum; I had to find a husband within a few months or I would say goodbye to the inheritance. I was angry, but not because I wanted the money. It was a matter of principle. How dare they control my life like this?

For weeks I didn’t answer their calls, I didn’t visit them. Then, one evening, a brilliant idea struck me.

Walking home from work, thinking about files and deadlines, I saw him. A man in his late 30s, sitting on the sidewalk, holding a cardboard sign asking for help.

He looked disheveled, his beard unkempt and his clothes dirty, but there was something in his eyes. A kindness and sadness that stopped me in my tracks…

That’s when the idea struck me. It was crazy, but it seemed like the perfect solution to all my problems.

I said to the man, “Excuse me, it might sound crazy, but would you like to marry me?”

His eyes widened in shock. “What, ma’am?”

Taking a deep breath, I said, “Look, I know this sounds strange, but listen to me. I need to get married urgently. This will only be a marriage on paper. I’ll give you a place to stay, clean clothes, food, and some money. In return, all you have to do is play the role of my husband. What do you say?”

He stared at me for what felt like an eternity. I was sure he thought I was joking.

“Madam, are you serious?” he asked.

“Absolutely,” I assured him. “By the way, I’m Melis.”

Still looking surprised, he said, “And I’m Sinan. And you’re really proposing marriage to a homeless man you just met?”

I shook my head.

“I know it sounds crazy, but I promise I’m not a serial killer or anything. I’m just a desperate woman whose family interferes too much in her life.”

“Honestly, Melis, I have to say, this is the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to me.”

“So, your answer is yes?” I asked.

He looked at me for a long time, and I saw that sparkle in his eyes again. “You know what? Why not? Agreed, my future wife.”

And so, my life took a turn I could never have imagined.

I took Sinan shopping, got him a makeover at a hair salon, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that beneath that layer of dirt and grime lay a rather handsome man.

Three days later, I introduced him to my family as my “secret fiancé.” To say they were shocked would be an understatement.

“Melis!” my mother exclaimed. “Why didn’t you tell us?”

“You know, Mom, I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure you were serious,” I lied. “But Sinan and I are so in love, aren’t we, honey?”

Sinan, to his credit, played his role brilliantly. He completely charmed my family with our made-up love at first sight story.

A month later, we got married.

To be on the safe side, just in case my little plan backfired, I had them sign a very strict prenuptial agreement. But surprisingly, living with Sinan wasn’t bad at all.

He was funny, intelligent, and always ready to help with the housework. We formed an easy friendship, like roommates who sometimes have to pretend to be madly in love. However, there was one thing that made me uneasy.

Whenever I asked Sinan about his past, how he ended up on the streets, he would withdraw. A cloud would descend over his eyes, and he would immediately change the subject. It was a mystery that both intrigued and irritated me.

Then came the day that changed everything.

It was an ordinary day returning home from work. As I entered, a trail of rose petals caught my attention. It led me to the living room.

The sight that greeted me in the living room left me speechless. The entire room was filled with roses, and on the floor was a giant heart made of petals.

And there, in the center of it all, stood Sinan.

But this wasn’t the Sinan I knew. The comfortable jeans and t-shirts I’d given him were gone. Instead, he wore a stylish black tuxedo that looked more expensive than my monthly rent. In his hand, he held a small, velvet box.

“Sinan?” I managed to whisper. “What’s going on?”

He smiled, and I swear my heart stopped for a moment.

“Melis,” he said. “I wanted to thank you for accepting me. You’ve made me incredibly happy. If you truly love me and become my wife, not just on paper but in real life, I’ll be even happier. I fell in love with you the moment I saw you, and these past month together have been the happiest time of my life. Will you marry me? This time, really?”

My eyes widened, and I stood there, trying to understand what was happening. Thousands of questions raced through my mind, but one stood out.

“Sinan,” I said softly, “where did you get the money for all this? The tuxedo, the flowers, and this ring?”

Taking a deep breath, he said, “I think it’s time I told you the truth. Look, I never told you I was homeless because it was too complicated and could have put you in a difficult position. Besides, I really loved this life we built together.”

“I became homeless because my brothers decided to get rid of me and take over my company,” he continued. “They forged documents, imitated my signatures, and even stole my identity. One day they left me in this city, miles away from my home. When I tried to go to the police, they used their influence and I couldn’t get any help. They even bribed my lawyer.”

I listened silently as Sinan recounted his story.

He told me how he’d lost everything, how he’d spent months trying to survive on the streets. And then, how meeting me had given him the strength to fight back…

“When they gave me a home, clean clothes, and some money, I decided to fight,” he explained. “I contacted the best law firm in the country, one my brothers couldn’t influence because they worked for their rivals.”

“I told them my story and promised a large payment,” he said. “At first, they didn’t want to take the case without an advance, but when they realized they could beat their rivals, they agreed. Thanks to them, a court date has been set for next month; my documents and bank accounts have already been returned.”

He paused and looked at me with those compassionate eyes that had initially caught my attention.

“I’ll be honest,” he smiled. “I’m not a poor man. I’ve searched for love my whole life, but every woman I’ve met has only been interested in my money. You, on the other hand, treated me kindly, even though you thought I had nothing. That’s why I fell for you. I apologize for hiding all this from you for so long.”

Unable to process what he was telling me, I slumped into the chair. I couldn’t believe that the man I’d married on a whim was actually wealthy and harbored genuine feelings for me.

“Sinan,” I finally managed to say, “you’ve really surprised me. I think I have feelings for you too, but all this new information is too much.”

He nodded understandingly and led me to the dining table. We ate the meal he had prepared. After dinner, I shared my feelings with Sinan.

“Sinan, thank you for this romantic gesture. No one has ever done anything like this for me before.” As I spoke, I felt a tear roll down my cheek.

“I’m going to marry you. This is my own decision now. But can you ask me again in six months? If my decision remains the same, we’ll have a real wedding. First, let’s see how life goes for both of us with this new information. You have a tough legal battle ahead of you, and I will support you throughout this process.”

Sinan’s face lit up with a smile. “I’m so happy. Of course, I’ll ask you again in six months. But will you accept my ring now?”

I nodded, and he put the ring on my finger. We hugged and kissed for the first time. It wasn’t a Hollywood kiss with fireworks, but it felt right. It felt like home.

As I write this, I’m still trying to make sense of it all. To spite my family, I married a homeless man, only to discover he’s actually a kind-hearted, wealthy businessman. Life really does take mysterious turns.
