He was pulling papers out now.

“Margaret, he’s going through Daniel’s things.”

“I know. Stay where you are. Do not confront him physically.”

Her voice remained steady.

“You need medical help first. Everything else can be handled through records.”

Records.

That word seemed almost ridiculous after what had just happened.

My scalp hurt. My knee throbbed. My clothes were wet. My husband was dead.

And somewhere in an office, ordinary pieces of paper were about to decide whether my father could turn grief into ownership.

Margaret told me to call emergency services immediately and keep her on the line if I could.

I did.

I gave my address.

I said I was eight months pregnant.

I said my water had broken after I had been dragged and shoved out of my home.

Saying it aloud made the scene sound worse than it had felt while it was happening.

Maybe shock does that.

While I spoke, Richard kept searching.

Kelsey hovered near him now, no longer leaning comfortably against the counter.

I could see them talking, though I could not hear every word.

Richard pointed toward the desk.

Kelsey said something back.

He snapped at her.

That was the first crack in their confidence.

Not fear yet.

Just irritation.

The performance was no longer going according to plan.

When I finished the emergency call, Margaret was still there.

She asked whether the folder Richard had brought was visible.

“Yes.”

“Do not touch it.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good.”

Then she said something I would remember almost word for word.

“Let him leave everything exactly where he put it.”

That was when I understood the difference between arguing and documenting.

My father wanted an argument.

He understood arguments. He could dominate them, interrupt them, raise his voice, make people doubt themselves, and leave before anyone reached the point.

Margaret wanted facts.

The emergency key.

The folder.

The call to her office.

The claim that I had authorized him.

The disturbed desk.

My physical condition on the porch.

The deed.

The trust.

The shares.

None of those things cared how loud Richard became.

The siren grew closer.

Inside, Richard’s phone started ringing.

He glanced at the screen.

Something about the number made him answer immediately.

“Yes?”

I could not hear the person on the other end.

Richard’s posture changed first.

His shoulders stiffened.

Then he turned away from Daniel’s desk.

“What do you mean?” he said.

Kelsey watched him.

I stayed on the porch, one hand wrapped around my phone and the other pressed beneath my stomach.

Margaret said my name quietly.

“I’m here.”

“Do you see him?”

“Yes.”

“Do not go inside.”

Richard listened for several seconds.

Then his eyes moved toward me.

Not with anger this time.

With calculation.

He turned partially away again.

“No. That can’t be right.”

The words were sharp enough that I heard them from outside.

Kelsey stepped closer.

“What happened?” she asked.

Richard lifted one finger toward her without looking away from the phone.

Wait.

It was the same gesture he used on everyone when he wanted silence.

Usually, Kelsey obeyed it with a smile.

This time, she stared at him.

The siren was almost at the street now.

I felt another tightening across my abdomen and closed my eyes for a moment.

Daniel should have been there.

That thought hit harder than anything my father had done.

Daniel should have been the one grabbing the hospital bag.

Daniel should have been telling me I was breathing too fast.

Daniel should have been making some terrible joke because he never knew what else to do when he was scared.

Instead, I was on the porch with Margaret Sloan in my ear while the man who raised me stood inside my house trying to understand why a plan he had treated as finished was suddenly slipping away.

Grief did not disappear because I had a problem to solve.

It sat beside every practical decision.

That was the part nobody warned me about.

You can be devastated and still have to remember passwords.

You can miss your husband so badly you cannot breathe and still have to answer questions about deeds.

You can be frightened for your baby and still notice where someone left a folder.

Life does not wait until emotions become convenient.

Richard finally lowered the phone a few inches.

Kelsey leaned toward him.

“What is it?”

He did not answer her.

He looked at the desk again, but not like a man searching for something anymore.

Now he looked like a man realizing the desk might contain things he should never have touched.

Margaret spoke quietly through my phone.

“Get up, you lazy cow! You think being pregnant makes you a queen? Get downstairs and cook for my parents NOW!” my husband screamed at 5 a.m. as he dragged me out of bed. His parents sat downstairs laughing while I collapsed in pain. What none of them realized was that, before everything went black, I managed to send one desperate text. Five minutes later, someone kicked in the front door.

My husband invited his boss to dinner, but just before he arrived, he looked at me with disgust and whispered, “Stay in the bedroom. I’m ashamed to have you seen like this. If my boss sees you, you’ll ruin my promotion.” I cooked the meal, served their drinks, and stayed silent.
