Now I called the number.
A woman answered.
She introduced herself as Agent Morris.
I gave my name.
Then I said Caleb’s.
The other end of the line went quiet.
Not confused.
Not searching through notes.
Quiet in the way people become quiet when a name has just reopened something unfinished.
Then she asked one question.
“Is the child safe with you right now?”
I looked across the room at Mia.
She had put the backpack on again.
Both straps this time.
“Yes,” I said. “My parents return Sunday.”
Agent Morris’s instructions were immediate.
Do not confront them.
Do not sign the custody statement.
Do not let the notebook leave my sight.
I looked toward the kitchen while she spoke.
The document my mother had pressed under my hand only three days earlier was still sitting where I had left it.
Suddenly its language looked different.
Born silent.
Unable to remember dates.
Agitated by investigators.
Those sentences no longer sounded like descriptions of Mia.
They sounded like instructions for how other adults were supposed to dismiss her.
I asked Agent Morris what had happened after Caleb died.
She would not explain everything over the phone.
She repeated that Mia’s safety came first and that I should not alert my parents before their return.
Sunday.
I thought of the cruise ship, the balcony cabin, my father’s vacation shirt, and the complete confidence with which they had walked out of my kitchen.
They believed they would come home to the same arrangement they had left behind.
Mia staying quiet.
Me asking no useful questions.
A signed statement waiting on the counter.
But Mia was already moving.
She unzipped her backpack.
I watched her reach inside and remove a folded sheet of paper.
She placed it beside me on the floor.
It was my parents’ cruise itinerary.
I unfolded it.
Their Sunday arrival pier had been circled in purple crayon.
The same purple I had seen throughout the notebook.
I looked up at Mia.
She did not point toward the phone.
She did not point toward the itinerary.
Instead, she opened the notebook again and turned all the way to the inside back cover.
Then she pressed one finger beneath the paper lining.
At first I did not understand what she wanted me to notice.
She pressed again.
Something hard shifted underneath it.
I stopped breathing for a second.
Mia’s eyes stayed fixed on the notebook.
Whatever she had protected inside that backpack through every meal, every room, every sudden noise, and every night she slept with her shoes on was not finished telling the story.
