Part 3

When I saw the Heidehof estate again for the first time, I cried. Not because it was so magnificent—although it was, in that quiet English way, with ivy clinging to the warm stone walls and expansive lawns stretching to ancient oak trees. Not because it was the place where I had spent my summers as a child after my parents died, or because Uncle Klaus had preserved my old bedroom exactly as it had been when I was twelve. I cried because, the moment the car rolled through the gates and Lukas whispered, “Mom, is this ours now?”, I realized that my children were already beginning to understand what security felt like.

Uncle Klaus greeted us on the steps even before the driver had completely stopped the car. He was in his sixties, silver-haired, broad-shouldered, and wearing a waxed outdoor jacket despite the June sunshine. He opened my door himself, took me in his arms, and simply said, “You’re home.” That sentence shook me more than anything David had done. I hadn’t cried in court. Not in the car. Not at the airport. But standing in my uncle’s embrace, my children by my side, the worst finally behind me, I allowed myself to grieve.

Not for David. Not for the years. Not for the woman I had become while shrinking myself to fit someone else’s ambitions. Not for the loneliness of a marriage to a man who only valued me when I made his life easier.

Klaus held me until I had composed myself. Then he crouched down and smiled at the children. “You must be Lukas and Sophie.” Lukas nodded cautiously. Sophie hid behind my leg. Klaus smiled more broadly. “I have a treehouse, a Labrador who steals sandwiches, and a cook who makes the best chocolate pudding in all of England.” Sophie peeked out from behind me. “Really?” “Absolutely.” Even at dinner, she followed him around the kitchen like a shadow.

That night, after the children had fallen asleep in freshly made beds under the skylights, I sat in the library with Klaus and Stefan Schmidt, who was joining us via video link from Frankfurt. Stefan got straight to the point. “Katharina, the consequences are accelerating.” He explained everything with the precision of a man who trusted facts more than emotions. The condominium David had claimed was premarital property? The down payment came from my parents’ trust fund. We had the receipts. The company accounts? He had moved funds through shell companies to conceal assets before the divorce. The property he had bought with Alina? Potentially traceable to marital income, which made it subject to seizure. And worst of all: at least two tax returns appeared to be incomplete.

Klaus leaned back in his chair. “How vulnerable is he?” Stefan adjusted his glasses. “What if we pursue this aggressively? Very much so.” I stared at the documents spread out on the table. “I don’t want a circus.” “You already have one,” Klaus said gently. “The real question is whether you plan to be swallowed up by it or outlive it.”

I exhaled slowly. “What do you recommend?” Stefan answered immediately. “Freeze everything you can. Challenge the post-divorce agreement for hidden assets. Secure long-term child support. And document every hostile communication from him or his family.” I almost laughed at the last part. “This file will be thicker than the Bible by tomorrow morning.” Stefan didn’t smile. “Then we’ll build a case out of it.”

For the next week, life split into two separate worlds. In Surrey, there were school visits, warm baths, quiet dinners, and the slow, wonderful process of my children relaxing. Lukas started sleeping through the night again. Sophie stopped asking if Dad was angry. I walked through the gardens early in the morning and remembered how I used to enjoy the silence.

In Frankfurt, according to Stefan, David’s world became almost unrecognizable. Alina disappeared from social media and from David’s apartment. Linda stopped taking calls from her friends after gossip about the incident at the clinic had spread to three golf clubs and a charity board before sunset. Melanie tried to limit the damage to the family’s reputation and failed spectacularly.

David, on the other hand, swung from anger to despair. First, he sent an email: We need to talk. Then: You had no right to take the children out of the country without consulting us. Then: I know you orchestrated this. What did you tell the clinic? And finally: Please let me speak with Lukas and Sophie.

I let Stefan handle the legalities and arranged a monitored video call. David appeared on the screen, looking ten years older than the man I’d divorced. His tie was askew. His eyes were bloodshot. He smiled too quickly when the children appeared. “Hey, big guy. Hey, princess.” Lukas squirmed uncomfortably. Sophie hid half her face behind my arm. David swallowed hard. “How are you?” “Pretty good,” Lukas replied. “That’s nice. That’s nice.” David forced another smile. “Do you like England?” Sophie nodded. “There’s a dog.”

For a brief second, David actually looked relieved. Then he noticed me at the edge of the screen, and the relief vanished. “Katharina, can we talk privately?” “No.” His jaw muscles clenched. “You can’t keep this up forever.” “I’m not stopping you from talking to your children. I’m stopping you from controlling me.” “That’s not fair.” I almost laughed. “Fair?” He looked away. “I made mistakes.”

That word. Mistakes. As if, emotionally, cheating for a year, publicly humiliating myself, and trying to hide assets before a divorce were the same as driving a car into a mailbox. I said nothing.

The phone call with the children lasted eight minutes. Afterward, Lukas asked quietly, “Why did Dad look so scared?” Because sometimes the truth is the first mirror a liar can’t escape, I thought. But out loud, I said, “Because adults get scared when life changes.”

Days later, the official applications were filed in Frankfurt. Asset concealment. Fraudulent transfers. Revised financial statements. Applications for temporary alimony. And that was the moment David made his biggest mistake yet. He went to my old apartment to look for me and found it empty. Not just empty. Disintegrated.

Because before I left the country, I had already taken everything of importance. The photo albums. The children’s drawings. My mother’s jewelry. My father’s letters. The things David had never noticed because they couldn’t be sold or shown off. Following Stefan’s instructions, the building manager handed David an envelope. Inside was a formal notice: Any further contact with Ms. Hagen outside of legal channels will be documented.

It wasn’t dramatic. It was better. It was final.

That evening, Klaus found me in the greenhouse behind the house, surrounded by the scent of basil and tomato plants warmed by the late afternoon sun. “You did the right thing,” he said. I looked down at my hands. “Then why does it still hurt?” He took his time answering. “Because being right doesn’t protect you from the grief. It only protects you from ruin.”

I looked through the glass at the lawn, where Lukas was kicking a soccer ball and Sophie was chasing the dog in wild circles. For months, maybe years, I had believed that survival meant enduring. But survival, I began to understand, could also mean leaving.
