“Then you shouldn’t be discussing it in a cafeteria.”

“It contains operational information.”

Elena stepped between them.

“Private Reed.”

“Yes, ma’am?”

“Take it out.”

Noah removed a folded sheet.

Kane’s breathing changed.

Elena held out her hand.

Noah passed it to her.

She unfolded the page.

AIRCRAFT READINESS CERTIFICATION.

Her eyes moved down the form.

Three aircraft numbers.

One signature block.

And a handwritten correction.

SYSTEM PASSED — CLEARED FOR FLIGHT.

Elena looked at Noah.

“Did you inspect these aircraft?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Then why are you being asked to sign?”

Noah glanced at Kane.

Kane spoke carefully.

“Because his section performed the diagnostics.”

Noah shook his head.

“No, sir.”

A few soldiers looked up.

Kane stared at him.

Noah continued.

“The diagnostics failed.”

Elena’s eyes sharpened.

“All three?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“What failed?”

“Flight-control monitoring on two.”

He hesitated.

“And the third had a fuel-pressure fault.”

Elena looked back at the form.

Yet all three aircraft had been marked operational.

“Kane.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Who changed the findings?”

“I don’t know.”

Noah looked at him.

Kane noticed.

“What?”

Noah said nothing.

Elena stepped closer to him.

“Private?”

His voice was barely audible.

“Colonel Kane did.”

The room went completely silent.

Kane laughed once.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Noah’s face went pale.

“You came to our maintenance bay last night.”

“I inspect units.”

“You told Sergeant Willis to rerun the test.”

“That is normal procedure.”

“The aircraft failed again.”

Kane’s jaw tightened.

Noah continued.

“Then you told him to clear it manually.”

“Enough.”

Elena did not raise her voice.

“Keep talking.”

Kane turned toward her.

“General, this private is confused.”

Noah looked almost sick.

“I saved the original results.”

Kane froze.

Elena noticed immediately.

“Where?”

Noah pulled a small flash drive from his pocket.

The reaction was instant.

Kane lunged.

Elena caught his wrist.

Several chairs scraped backward.

Kane stopped.

Everyone stared at the general’s hand around his arm.

Elena released him slowly.

“That was a mistake.”

Kane stepped back.

“I thought he was reaching for something else.”

“In a room full of witnesses?”

He said nothing.

Elena held out her hand.

Noah gave her the flash drive.

She looked toward the captain near the end of the table.

“Laptop.”

The captain brought one immediately.

Elena inserted the drive.

Three diagnostic reports appeared.

FAILED.

FAILED.

FAILED.

Noah had told the truth.

Elena opened the first report.

Then the second.

Then the third.

All timestamped before the certification form had been modified.

Kane’s face had become unreadable.

Elena leaned back.

“Colonel, why are unsafe aircraft being cleared?”

“They aren’t unsafe.”

“The diagnostics say otherwise.”

“Systems throw false faults.”

“Then why hide the original results?”

Kane did not answer.

Elena clicked another file.

A video.

Noah’s face changed.

“I didn’t put that there.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“That video isn’t mine.”

Kane stepped forward.

“Don’t open it.”

Elena turned.

“Why?”

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

Too late.

She clicked PLAY.

The screen showed a dim maintenance hangar.

Timestamp: 02:14.

A man stood beside one of the helicopters.

Sergeant Willis.

Noah whispered:

“That’s my supervisor.”

Another man entered the frame.

Colonel Kane.

Several soldiers in the cafeteria shifted.

Kane’s voice came through the  laptop speakers.

“Clear all three.”

Willis shook his head.

“They’re not flight-ready.”

“You didn’t hear me.”

“Sir, if one of those systems fails in the air—”

“Then it fails.”

The cafeteria went deathly quiet.

Kane stepped toward the laptop.

Elena raised one hand.

“Stay where you are.”

The recording continued.

Willis lowered his voice.

“Why are these aircraft so important?”

Kane answered:

“They’re not.”

A pause.

“The passengers are.”

Elena felt the temperature in the room drop.

Noah stared at the screen.

“What passengers?”

The video crackled.

Willis asked the same question.

Kane looked directly toward the hangar camera.

Then:

“Tomorrow’s command delegation.”

Elena’s face hardened.

She turned toward Kane.

“What delegation?”

Kane said nothing.

A colonel near the rear of the cafeteria suddenly stood.

“General.”

Elena looked at him.

His face was pale.

“What?”

“The joint command delegation arrives tomorrow morning.”

Elena already knew.

That was why she was there.

But then the colonel added:

“Those three helicopters are assigned to transport them.”

Noah’s mouth fell open.

Elena looked back at Kane.

“You wanted unsafe aircraft carrying senior command.”

Kane’s expression suddenly changed.

Not fear anymore.

Resignation.

“You’re misunderstanding.”

“Then explain.”

Kane looked around the room.

Then toward the ceiling cameras.

“I can’t.”

Elena stepped closer.

“You’re running out of useful answers.”

Kane lowered his voice.

“If I tell you here, people die.”

Elena studied him.

“You expect me to believe you’re protecting someone?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Kane looked at Noah.

Then at the flash drive.

Then back at Elena.

“You.”

The room went still again.

Elena almost laughed.

“Me?”

Kane nodded.

“You were never supposed to reveal your rank.”

“That was my decision.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“That was the only reason you were still safe.”

Elena’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Kane looked toward the entrance.

Three military police officers had just appeared.

But he didn’t seem relieved.

He seemed terrified.

“General, who called them?”

Elena glanced toward the captain.

“Did you?”

The captain shook his head.

“No, ma’am.”

Kane whispered:

“Then they know.”

The MPs entered.

Their commander stepped forward.

“General Carter, Colonel Kane, we need everyone to remain where they are.”

Elena looked at him.

“On whose authority?”

The officer hesitated.

“Command security.”

“Name.”

“Major Foster.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“Who sent you, Major?”

Foster looked toward Kane.

That was enough.

Kane stepped backward.

“No.”

Foster’s hand moved toward his sidearm.

Elena saw it.

“So did Noah.”

The private suddenly whispered:

“Ma’am…”

“What?”

He pointed at the laptop.

Another file had appeared.

Noah looked terrified.

“I swear that wasn’t there before.”

Elena turned.

The file name read:

CARTER_FINAL.

Her blood went cold.

Kane looked at the screen.

“No.”

Elena clicked it.

A single image appeared.

A photograph of Elena entering the base that morning.

Plain insignia.

No visible rank.

Taken from a long distance.

Beneath it were four words.

TARGET CONFIRMED ON SITE.

Noah backed away.

Kane closed his eyes.

Elena looked slowly toward Major Foster.

He had drawn his weapon.

But he wasn’t aiming at Kane.

He was aiming at her.

Then the laptop speakers crackled.

A distorted voice said:

“General Carter should never have opened the case.”

Elena remained perfectly still.

The voice continued.

“Colonel Kane failed.”

Kane whispered:

“I tried.”

Foster raised the weapon higher.

Elena looked at him.

Then at Kane.

“You knew I was the target.”

Kane nodded.

His face was gray.

“That’s why I needed those helicopters grounded without anyone asking why.”

Elena stared.

“But you were forcing them cleared.”

“No.”

Kane looked at the altered report.

“Someone was using my authorization.”

Before Elena could respond, another voice came from behind the MPs.

Calm.

Female.

Familiar.

“Put the gun down, Major.”

Foster froze.

Elena slowly turned.

A woman stood in the cafeteria entrance wearing a dark command uniform.

Elena had not seen her in twelve years.

Because officially—

she had been dead for eleven.

The woman looked directly at Elena.

Then smiled.

“Hello, sister.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“Get up, you lazy cow! You think being pregnant makes you a queen? Get downstairs and cook for my parents NOW!” my husband screamed at 5 a.m. as he dragged me out of bed. His parents sat downstairs laughing while I collapsed in pain. What none of them realized was that, before everything went black, I managed to send one desperate text. Five minutes later, someone kicked in the front door.
