Imagine this scenario: You receive a long-awaited package from China and find, alongside the ordered goods, several strange, dry, curled-up objects resembling small, withered shrubs. This is exactly what happened to one of our readers, who contacted us to ask what these unusual “gifts” were and why they were included in his shipment. Based on the photo, we can provide the answer: It’s a plant – the Rose of Jericho.
What is the Rose of Jericho? The Rose of Jericho, also known as the “Resurrection Plant,” “Dinosaur Plant,” “Resurrection Flower,” or even “Hand of Mary/Fatima,” is a truly remarkable and fascinating plant. There are several different species with this name, with Anastatica hierochuntica (the true Rose of Jericho, native to the Middle East and North Africa) and Selaginella lepidophylla (sometimes called the “false” Rose of Jericho, native to the Chihuahuan Desert in the USA and Mexico) being the most commonly cited. Although distinct species, both possess the remarkable ability to survive in extremely arid conditions. During dormancy or periods of drought, the Rose of Jericho curls its leaves and branches inward, forming a dry, grayish-brown, seemingly lifeless sphere. In this form, it can survive for years, carried by the wind across desert regions. The Miracle of “Resurrection”:
The most astonishing characteristic of this plant is its ability to revive upon exposure to moisture. If a completely dried Rose of Jericho is placed in a container of room-temperature water, it undergoes a complete transformation. Within a few hours (usually two to four), the shrunken sphere begins to slowly dissolve, and the leaves and branches gradually regain their green color, revealing a beautiful, fern-like structure. This process of overwintering and reviving can repeat itself many times over the years. Symbolism and Uses: The Rose of Jericho is deeply symbolic in various cultures and religions. It is considered an ancient symbol of love, happiness, health, rebirth, eternity, immortality, and resilience.
In the Christian tradition, it is associated with the resurrection of Christ. According to belief, it protects against negative energies and brings grace and life to the home in which it grows. In addition to its symbolic meaning, the Rose of Jericho is also used in traditional medicine. A tea is prepared from the seeds, dried leaves, or flowers, which is used to treat various ailments such as colds, sore throats, asthma, menstrual cramps, and arthritis pain, as well as to support childbirth.
Some studies also suggest a positive effect against Helicobacter pylori and Escherichia coli. There could be many reasons for including these plants in the package from China. It might have been a small gift or a gesture of goodwill from the seller, given the plant’s positive symbolism (luck, joy). In some cultures, it’s customary to give such “talismans.” Another possibility is that it’s part of a marketing strategy aimed at pleasantly surprising the customer and leaving a good impression.
So, if you receive a similar “surprise” in a package, you know you’re now the owner of a unique and symbolic plant. You can “revive” it in a bowl of water and observe its transformation, then let it dry again and store it until you want to bring it back to life next time.
