The sealed bag from the freezer was the one thing Daniel had not accounted for.
When the nurse took it from my hand, the room changed. Daniel had spent the drive to the hospital repeating the same explanation: that I was exhausted, that I had probably mixed something up, that Noah and I had both simply reacted badly to dinner.
But there was one problem.
The food was still there.
The doctors did not need a story from him. They needed evidence.
And sitting under the bright hospital lights, with Noah beside me and a police officer waiting near the doorway, I watched Daniel realize that the evening he had planned was no longer following his script.
Earlier that night, everything had looked ordinary.

Nothing about the dinner table had looked dangerous.
The kitchen light was warm. The dishwasher was running. Noah had been telling me about a science project while Daniel moved between the stove and the counter, acting like any other husband preparing a family meal.
He even complained about the grocery store being crowded.

That was what made it difficult to understand when my body suddenly stopped cooperating.

The next thing I knew, my cheek was against the cold tile of the kitchen floor.

I heard Daniel leave the room.

The words were not loud, but they were enough.
He spoke like someone who believed there was no one left listening.
After that moment, every second became a choice.
I stayed still when he came back.

I stayed still when he moved near Noah.
The hardest part was hearing him speak gently.
Danger did not sound angry.
It sounded calm.
It sounded careful.
When Daniel walked away and the garage door closed, I opened my eyes.
Noah opened his at the same time.
We did not hug.
We did not talk loudly.
We did not waste time trying to understand why.
We looked for what we needed.
Our phones were gone.
That was the first thing we noticed.
Daniel had removed the easiest way to call for help.
But he had forgotten something else.
The old corded phone in the cabinet.
The one he always said took up space.
The one he wanted gone months earlier.
I reached behind the old menus and found it exactly where it had always been.
The line worked.
I gave the dispatcher our address before anything else.
Then I told her what happened.
