I rushed to the cemetery to find his grave, but the old caretaker looked at me with pity and whispered, “Your father isn’t here.” My blood ran cold. Then I discovered a secret letter and a key he had left behind. What they would lead me to could destroy my stepmother’s life forever…

PART 1

“YOUR FATHER DIED A YEAR AGO! NOW GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!”

Those were the first words my stepmother said to me when I came home after three years in prison.

For 1,095 days behind bars, I had dreamed of only one thing: hugging my father, Franklin Hayes, again.

I pictured him sitting in his old leather armchair, patiently waiting for his son to return.

But when I arrived, something felt wrong.

The porch railing was freshly painted. There were unfamiliar plants in the garden. Even the old blue front door that Dad loved so much was gone.

I knocked.

Sharon, my stepmother, appeared with an ice-cold expression.

“Well, look who got out.”

I swallowed.

“Where’s my father?”

Sharon was silent for a few seconds before answering with total calm.

“He died a year ago.”

I felt the ground disappear beneath my feet.

“WHAT? MY FATHER DIED? WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME?”

She shrugged.

“You were in prison! What did you want, for us to mail you a sympathy card?”

I looked over her shoulder.

Dad’s photographs were gone. His old armchair was gone. Almost nothing was left to prove he had ever lived there.

“I want to see his room.”

“There’s nothing left to see!”

Sharon slammed the door in my face.

That same afternoon, I went to the cemetery looking for his grave.

I found an old man tending the plots.

“Excuse me, sir. I’m looking for Franklin Hayes. He was my father.”

The man stopped working immediately.

He studied me closely and lowered his voice.

“Don’t look…”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

The old man stepped closer and whispered words that froze my blood:

“YOUR FATHER… ISN’T BURIED HERE!”

I stood there, paralyzed.

If my father had really died a year ago, where was his body?

And what was Sharon so desperately trying to hide from me?

PART 2: THE CEMETERY GROUNDSKEEPER HANDED ME A LETTER FROM MY DEAD FATHER, AND WHAT IT SAID CHANGED EVERYTHING I THOUGHT I KNEW

I stared at him while my confusion turned into a deepening unease. This old man seemed to know something about my father that nobody else had dared to tell me.

“Who are you, really?” I asked, trying to steady my voice.

He let out a tired sigh, as if he’d been waiting a long time for this conversation. He leaned his rake against the wall of the shed and turned to face me.

“My name is Amos,” he said. “I’ve kept these grounds for twenty-three years. I knew your father well. He was a good man, private, and a lot smarter than some people gave him credit for.”

My throat tightened. After three years in prison, I had come home to learn my father was dead and my stepmother had taken over our family house. She hadn’t even let me inside to collect my memories.

Now a stranger was talking about Dad as if he still had something important to tell me.

Amos reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out a small manila envelope. Its edges were worn, and the paper bore the marks of having been handled and checked countless times.

He held it out with a solemn look.

“Your father asked me to give you this if you ever came back asking about him.”

I didn’t move.

“How could he know I’d come?”

Amos held my gaze. “Because he never stopped waiting for you, son. And because he knew that when you did come back, there would be people willing to keep you from the truth.”

I took the envelope with shaking hands. It was surprisingly heavy for its size. When I pressed it gently, I felt a small metal object inside.

A key.

I carefully opened the flap and slid out a folded letter, a business card, and a small key taped to a slip of paper.

I recognized my father’s handwriting at once.

The firm, slightly slanted capital letters were the same ones he had used to label the toolboxes and drawers in our garage when I was a boy.

On the back of the card, he had written only three words.

I read them once.

Then again.

And when I finally understood what they meant, I looked up at Amos.

Because my father hadn’t left me just a last message.

He had told me where to find something my stepmother had spent years trying to keep from me.

PART 3: MY FATHER LEFT ME A KEY BEFORE HE DIED, AND WHAT I FOUND REVEALED WHY MY STEPMOTHER THREW ME OUT

The three words on the card read: “UNDER THE BENCH.”

A chill ran through me.

In our old backyard, there was a wooden bench beside the big oak tree. Dad used to sit there every evening, even in the months before I was arrested.

“My father hid something there?” I asked.

Amos nodded.

“He made me promise not to let anyone remove it. Sharon tried to have it torn out twice, but I convinced her the wood was still good.”

I unfolded the letter.

“Son, if you’re reading this, it means I couldn’t wait for you. Forgive me for not showing you how much you meant to me while I still had time.”

Tears blurred my vision.

I kept reading.

“Never believe I gave up on you. I looked into what happened while you were gone, and I found papers that someone wanted kept away from you. Don’t trust whatever version of my estate they tell you.”

I raised my head.

“Amos, I need to get back to that house.”
