PART 1

Liam had been asking me for weeks.

“Mom, it’s ten minutes. I’m eleven. I can walk home by myself.”

Normally, I picked him up every afternoon, but he wasn’t wrong. His school was close, the route was familiar, and we’d walked it together dozens of times. So that Friday, I finally agreed.

Before he left that morning, I made him repeat the rules.

“Straight home. No shortcuts. No stopping anywhere.”

Liam sighed. “I know.”

“And text me when you leave school.”

“Yes, Mom.”

At 3:11, my phone buzzed.

Liam: On my way.

I smiled. He’d been so excited about doing something on his own that I decided not to hover. Ten minutes passed. Then fifteen. At twenty, I checked the window. No Liam.

I picked up my phone to text him. Before I could, it rang.

It was Evelyn. She lived three houses down and had known Liam since he was little.

“Hey, Evelyn.”

For a second, all I could hear was her breathing. Then I realized she was crying.

“Are you home?”

My stomach tightened. “Yeah. What happened?”

“Come outside. It’s about Liam.”

“Evelyn, what happened?”

“He’s here. He’s okay.”

“Then why are you crying?”

She took a shaky breath. “You need to see what your son did.”

I was already moving toward the door. When I stepped outside, Evelyn was standing near the curb, wiping tears from her face. Liam was farther down the sidewalk, his backpack still on.

I walked closer and stopped.

“Liam… what have you done?”

PART 2

I was thirty-three, and for five years, my life had revolved around two things: raising my son and paying for a marriage that no longer existed.

My ex-husband, Garrett, left on a Tuesday morning. He kissed our six-year-old son, Liam, promised to be home for dinner, and disappeared. Three days later, he called: “I’m filing for divorce, Samantha.”

Garrett left us with credit card debt and unpaid loans. I worked mornings at a dental office and cleaned an insurance agency at night.

I kept one photograph of Garrett wearing the expensive watch I’d given him for our anniversary. It had a blue face and an engraving on the back: ‘Always your home. S.’ I’d saved for six months to buy it.

Evelyn moved three houses away six months after Garrett left. Living alone, with a daughter and granddaughter in another city, our new neighbor seemed eager to help. Liam often received homemade cookies, and when money got tight, Evelyn even lent me some. But her kindness came with plenty of questions about Garrett.

That Friday afternoon, after Evelyn called me outside, Liam was clutching a yellow garbage bag.Liam sighed. “I know.”

“And text me when you leave school.”

“Yes, Mom.”

“Mom, I didn’t steal anything!” Liam cried.

“Your son took my belongings!” Evelyn snapped.

“She threw them away!”

“Don’t yell at him,” I said. “Liam, explain.”

“I saw cardboard beside her garbage cans. I wanted it for something I’m making.”

Evelyn reached for the bag. “Give it back!”

“If there’s anything valuable, we’ll return it,” I said.

I turned the bag upside down. Cardboard and fabric scraps scattered across the sidewalk. A man’s shirt fell out, followed by a wristwatch tangled in its sleeve.

I walked away from a $600 million deal and found my ex-wife counting coins just to buy food for two identical little boys, while my mother was still living in luxury.
