The Town Laughed When They Saw Her Get Off the Stagecoach. They Didn’t Know the Mountain Man Was About to Meet His Match

The stagecoach came to a violent, groaning halt outside the Ridgeville Mercantile, and nearly everyone on the street turned to watch.

Seven brides had arrived before Martha.

Seven hopeful women had climbed the mountain to marry Gideon Blackwood, and every one of them had returned within a week—crying, humiliated, and desperate to leave town before anyone asked what had happened.

So when the eighth stagecoach rolled into Ridgeville on a cold October morning, nobody expected a love story.

They expected another disaster.

The townspeople gathered outside the mercantile, leaning against wooden posts and wagon wheels, whispering behind gloved hands.

“That poor woman doesn’t know what she’s walking into.”

“Give her three days.”

“Three days? I give her two.”

Old Samuel Carter, who owned the general store, shook his head.

“That mountain isn’t a place for someone like her.”

Someone like her.

Those were the words everyone used.

Because when the stagecoach door finally opened, the woman who stepped down was not what they expected.

She was not young and delicate.

She was not dressed in expensive silk.

She was not the kind of woman men in Ridgeville imagined Gideon Blackwood would want.

She was tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Strong.

Her dark brown coat hung over a sturdy frame built by years of hard work. Her boots were worn. Her hair was tied back simply. She carried one small leather suitcase and looked at the crowd with calm gray eyes.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then someone laughed.

A loud, ugly laugh.

“That’s the bride?”

More laughter followed.

Martha Whitmore simply adjusted her coat.

She had heard worse.

Much worse.

She looked toward the mountain path leading to Gideon’s ranch.

Then she smiled.

Because the people laughing at her had no idea who they were laughing at.

Gideon Blackwood had become a legend in Ridgeville.

Not the kind of legend people celebrated.

The kind they whispered about.

He was called the Mountain Devil by some.

The Black Wolf by others.

A man who lived alone on a ranch several miles beyond the town limits.

He was enormous.

Nearly six and a half feet tall.

His hands were scarred from years of ranch work, his face hardened by winters, and his silence was heavier than most men’s anger.

People said he scared away every woman who came near him.

But the truth was more complicated.

Gideon was not cruel.

He was simply wounded.

Ten years earlier, he had lost his wife and infant son during a brutal winter storm.

After that, something inside him closed.

“Get up, you lazy cow! You think being pregnant makes you a queen? Get downstairs and cook for my parents NOW!” my husband screamed at 5 a.m. as he dragged me out of bed. His parents sat downstairs laughing while I collapsed in pain. What none of them realized was that, before everything went black, I managed to send one desperate text. Five minutes later, someone kicked in the front door.

My husband invited his boss to dinner, but just before he arrived, he looked at me with disgust and whispered, “Stay in the bedroom. I’m ashamed to have you seen like this. If my boss sees you, you’ll ruin my promotion.” I cooked the meal, served their drinks, and stayed silent.
