PART 1 — THE CHAIR

Bone is strange.

For most of your life, you never think about it.

You run, lift, fall, climb, sleep, fight, and carry things without considering the scaffolding beneath your skin.

Then one violent second makes you aware of every inch.

I heard the crack before I understood what had happened.

One moment, I was standing near the edge of the stage at an assembly hall on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, still uncomfortable with the Purple Heart pinned to my dress uniform.

The next, a metal folding chair struck my left forearm.

Pain shot from my wrist almost to my shoulder.

My knees folded.

The small presentation case I had been holding hit the hardwood floor beside me.

For half a second, the room disappeared into white light.

Then sound returned.

A gasp.

Someone shouting.

Boots against the stage.

And Gertrude.

My stepmother stood several feet away still gripping the chair.

Her face looked exactly the way it had when I was seventeen and she found a photograph of me wearing a fitted dress to prom.

Contempt.

Not anger alone.

Contempt.

“You’re still nothing but trash in a costume!”

Her voice carried across the hall.

Nearly three hundred people had been attending the ceremony.

Soldiers.

Veterans.

Families.

Unit leaders.

A handful of local officials.

Men and women who had spent the previous half hour applauding service members they barely knew now stared at the woman who had just hit one of them with a chair.

Then Gertrude used the word she had been calling me privately since I was a teenager.

“Whore!”

The entire room seemed to stop breathing.

I barely heard her.

I was looking at my father.

Charles sat in the third row.

He had seen the chair rise.

Seen it come down.

Seen me fall.

For nineteen years, I had imagined the moment when Gertrude would finally go too far in front of him.

Surely there was a line.

Surely one day she would cross it and my father would stand between us.

This was it.

It had to be.

I waited for him to get up.

Charles looked at me.

Then at Gertrude.

Then lowered his eyes to his shoes.

I went to the hospital to surprise my husband at work. But the instant one of his colleagues noticed me, his face turned deathly pale. Then tears began gathering in his eyes. “He hasn’t told you anything, has he?” Ben and I had been married for eleven years, and throughout every single one of those years, I had shared him with the hospital. He was an exceptionally talented surgeon.

My boss asked me to escort his daughter to prom and promised he would reward me for doing it. I assumed it was nothing more than a simple favor until she opened the car door, turned toward me, and said, “Wait. My dad didn’t pick you randomly. And it wasn’t because of me.”
