Chapter 2: The Mat and the Monster

As Gregory’s heavy hand descended in a violent arc, I did not flinch. I gracefully ducked beneath the swing, letting the displaced air from his palm ruffle my hair.

Reflexes forged by thousands of grueling hours on sweat-stained mats activated instantly. My brain processed his off-balance posture in a microsecond, so before he could retract his arm, my hands shot upward, clamping like steel vises around his wrist and triceps. I pivoted sharply on the ball of my foot, driving my hips deep under his center of gravity.

With a sharp exhale, I executed a flawless, textbook shoulder throw.

The entire sequence took less than two seconds, ending with a sickeningly dull thud as Gregory’s two-hundred-pound frame launched through the air and crashed brutally onto the hard floor, landing squarely in the slick puddle of brown gravy and ruined potatoes.

Before his brain could even register the impact, I was on top of him. I dropped my full body weight, driving my knee directly into his floating ribs, pinning him to the floor while I snaked my legs over his chest and locked his right arm between my thighs, hyperextending his elbow into a punishing, inescapable armbar. It was the bread and butter of mixed martial arts, and I applied just enough excruciating pressure to completely paralyze him, pulling back a millimeter before the bone would snap.

“Aaargh!” Gregory shrieked, a high, guttural sound of pure agony escaping his throat while his cheek was pressed flat against the grease-stained floor and his eyes bulged in sheer terror. “Stop! You’re breaking my arm!”

In that violent instant, the ghosts of my past flickered behind my eyes. As a little girl, I was raised in a rotting house that permanently reeked of cheap bourbon and the senseless, explosive rage of my father. My mother, too fragile to endure the relentless beatings, packed a single bag and vanished across the country, leaving me at the mercy of a tyrant, making the purple and yellow bruises on my arms my constant childhood companions. I had believed my life would forever be defined by cowering in dark closets until the universe handed me Coach Douglas.

Douglas was a grizzled, ex-professional fighter who ran a gritty, bare-bones martial arts gym downtown. He saw a skinny, terrified teenager peering through his chain-link fence and took pity on me, rewiring my broken psychology instead of just teaching me how to throw a jab.

“Lorelei,” his raspy voice echoed in my memory from years ago, “you learn to fight not to bully the weak, but to ensure that no monster can ever, ever bully you.”

Through blood, sweat, and torn ligaments, martial arts earned me a full collegiate scholarship. I graduated with a degree in kinesiology, transitioned into finance to pay the bills, but I never left the mats, working every evening as a certified self-defense instructor for vulnerable women. Gregory, the arrogant architect of my domestic prison, had absolutely no clue who he had married.

“Don’t ever assume that just because you possess brute male strength, you are the apex predator in the room,” I hissed, my lips hovering inches from his ear. “Now, you are going to tell me the real reason behind this pathetic little food-throwing theater. Speak!”

“Okay, okay! I’ll tell you! Just let go of my arm!” Gregory sobbed, his body shaking uncontrollably.

Under the agonizing pressure of the joint lock, his tough-guy facade completely disintegrated. Gregory began to babble, stumbling over his words as the truth spilled out like poison.

He confessed that this entire ambush was orchestrated by his mother, Bernice. She had aggressively counseled him that during the first week of marriage, he needed to establish absolute dominance over me. He was instructed to terrorize me physically and psychologically, with the end goal of breaking my spirit so completely that I would blindly sign over the deed to my Palmer Woods condo and grant them full access to my corporate salary. Bernice had practically handed him a manual on how to weaponize domestic abuse for financial gain.

Using my free left hand, I calmly extracted my phone from my pocket, opened the voice recorder app, and pressed the microphone close to his face.

“Say it again,” I commanded icily, adjusting my grip slightly. “Every single word. Loud and clear.”

“My mother told me to do it!” Gregory whimpered into the phone, tears streaming down his face. “She said I had to break your spirit so you would give us the condo and your bank accounts! She planned all of it!”

Once I confirmed the audio was safely captured, I released the lock and sprang lightly to my feet. Gregory rolled onto his side, clutching his throbbing elbow against his chest, staring up at me as if I were a demon crawled straight out of hell.

I looked down at him with a face of absolute, withering disgust, stepped over his trembling legs without a word, and walked into the master bedroom, sliding the heavy deadbolt shut behind me.

As I lay in the dark listening to him quietly sobbing in the living room, I knew the war was far from over. Bernice would be coming, and when the matriarch realized her son had failed, she would bring hellfire to my doorstep.

My husband believed that being pregnant, raising two children, having no job, and depending on him financially meant I would never have the courage to leave. Then he brought his mistress into our home and calmly announced that she was moving into the guest suite. Fifteen minutes later, I came downstairs with my children, three packed suitcases, and a divorce petition he had no idea existed.
