PART 3

The dining room became completely silent when Elena and I walked inside.

My mother stood at the head of the table dressed in emerald silk, one hand placed possessively on my father’s chair.

Lucas wore my father’s signet ring.

“There he is,” my mother announced. “Daniel has agreed to step aside while he recovers from his wife’s influence.”

I pulled out a chair for Elena.

Lucas smirked. “Still carrying her bags?”

“No,” I replied. “I’m carrying yours.”

Two security officers entered and set the suitcases beside him.

My mother’s smile faltered.

“What is this?”

I connected my laptop to the dining-room screen.

The financial transfers appeared first, followed by invoices documenting Lucas’s debts, the beach villa, and payments made to a professional handwriting forger.

“These are private family matters,” my mother snapped.

“Fraud stops being private when you steal from a trust, forge a director’s signature, and launder the money through shell companies.”

Lucas rose abruptly.

“You can’t prove I knew.”

I played the bank surveillance footage.

On the screen, Lucas slid forged papers across the counter.

Then my mother’s recorded voice echoed through the dining room.

“Daniel trusts me. He’ll blame his wife.”

No one moved.

Elena tightened her fingers around mine.

My mother was the first to recover.

“Your father would never allow you to humiliate me.”

“Father anticipated you.”

Priya entered carrying the estate ledger.

She explained that after discovering earlier unauthorized withdrawals, my father had amended the trust.

Any beneficiary involved in fraudulent activity would immediately lose all income rights.

Any director participating in fraud would be removed from office.

My mother’s face turned pale.

Lucas whispered, “That’s impossible.”

I placed the voting certificate on the table.

“As majority voting trustee, I removed Lucas from every company position this afternoon. Your distributions are suspended. The villa and vehicles purchased with stolen funds have been seized.”

My mother rushed toward Elena.

“You poisoned him!”

I moved between them.

“No. You put your foot on my pregnant wife and assumed I would look away.”

Police officers entered behind Priya.

Lucas ran toward the terrace doors, but they had already been secured.

My mother screamed as both of them were taken into custody for fraud, forgery, coercion, and unlawful restraint.

The reporters published the entire story.

Within weeks, Lucas accepted a plea agreement that required incarceration and full repayment of the stolen funds.

My mother continued fighting the charges. She lost her trust income, sold her jewelry to cover legal expenses, and was eventually convicted after the recorded call and security footage destroyed her defense.

The former housekeeper also testified.

She confirmed that my mother had threatened to blacklist any employee who assisted Elena or tried to contact me.

I sold the marble house.

Elena never wanted to look at that floor again.

Six months later, sunlight filled our smaller home near the sea.

Our son slept peacefully against Elena’s chest while I prepared coffee.

She was healthy, barefoot by choice, and laughing again.

A courier arrived with the final restitution notice.

Every stolen dollar had been recovered.

Elena glanced toward the envelope.

“Do you want to open it?”

I placed it unopened inside a drawer.

“No,” I said as I kissed our son’s head. “They don’t live here anymore.”

Beyond the windows, the tide washed every footprint from the sand.

My sister threw a shoe at my pregnant wife for sitting in “her chair” at Mom’s house. Dad laughed: “Pregnancy hormones—relax.” Mom added: “Maybe sit on the floor next time.” My wife grabbed her coat. After we buried my husband, my son drove me to an empty road outside town and said, “This is where you get out. The house and the business belong to me now.” I stood there in the dust with nothing but my bag as he drove away without looking back. No phone. No money. That was when I realized something unexpected: I wasn’t trapped. I was finally free. What my son didn’t know was what I had quietly arranged before his father died…

At Christmas Eve dinner, my parents suddenly told me, “You’re 25. It’s time to move out and start supporting yourself.” My brother laughed as I calmly picked up my bag and headed for the door. Before I could leave, Mom hurried after me and asked, “Briar, you’ll still keep paying our bills, right?” The entire room fell silent.

The nurse had barely placed my newborn in my arms when my mother recoiled and said, “We’ll never accept a child without a father.” My father added coldly, “And we’ll never hold that baby.” I didn’t argue. I simply kissed my son’s forehead and stayed calm. What they didn’t know was that his father was the one man powerful enough to bring everything they owned crashing down, and he was already on his way.
