Then I saw the entry for Revenge 96: Fake car crash + blood donation. If this works, it will be our greatest achievement yet.

Below it was Brendan’s reply: It’s guaranteed to work. Chloe would do anything if she thinks I’m dying.

I turned off my phone, ran straight into the bathroom, and threw up in the sink.

My mother found me sitting cold on the tile floor, asking no questions as she gently held my hair back just like she used to do when I was a child.

“Three entire years of my life,” I sobbed quietly against her shoulder.

“I know, sweetheart,” she whispered soothingly.

“How could I have been so blind?” I cried out.

“Because you were looking for reasons to believe he loved you, not searching for proof that he hated you,” my mother answered softly.

We moved to Tucson the following week. My father secured a position at a regional firm while my mother settled into early retirement.

Life didn’t magically turn perfect just because I changed zip codes. Some mornings I woke up yearning for Brendan, remembering a lovely dinner or a rare afternoon when he seemed genuinely affectionate.

Whenever my mind tried to romanticize the past, I opened that terrible digital folder on my phone, read the entry for Revenge 96, and instantly snapped back to reality.

I took a part-time job at a local bakery downtown and enrolled in a community arts program. One afternoon, I passed by a modest dance studio and stood outside watching the class through the window.

The instructor opened the door and asked warmly, “Are you looking to sign up for a class?”

“No,” I replied softly. “I just used to dance a long time ago.”

“Well, that’s an easy problem to fix,” she smiled, inviting me inside.

My first few sessions were agonizing. My muscles were stiff, my timing was off, and every reflection in the mirror brought back painful memories of that university championship.

Yet I kept coming back week after week until Brendan’s critical voice slowly vanished from my head. I finally rediscovered the pure joy of movement and making my own choices.

Six months later, I performed a brief solo at a local community theater. My father recorded the whole dance with his phone tilted too low while my mother cried in the audience.

A fellow dancer posted a short clip of my performance online, and although it didn’t go viral, it reached an independent dance company based in Phoenix. They invited me to audition for their upcoming season.

When I first read their email, my instinct was to think I wasn’t good enough, but I immediately recognized that toxic thought wasn’t mine; it was the insecurity Brendan had planted inside me.

I accepted the offer and began commuting to Phoenix for weekly rehearsals.

Meanwhile, back in California, Brendan’s glossy world was crumbling into pieces. Scarlett refused to speak to him, and an argument with Liam escalated until Liam exposed the entire revenge log to their social circle out of spite.

Former classmates quickly connected the dots, recalling the false plagiarism scandal and the times Brendan had publicly humiliated me. The fake blood donation story became the absolute breaking point.

Even Mason, who had laughed in the clinic room, cut ties with Brendan to save his own reputation.

A year after I left, my old university invited me to speak at a seminar focused on emotional recovery and healthy relationships. I accepted the invitation because I refused to hide from an entire city on account of one man.

When I returned to California, my hands trembled as I walked past familiar landmarks, but the memories felt like they belonged to a completely different person.

During my speech, I didn’t mention any names, focusing instead on boundaries and self-worth.

“Real love will never ask you to shrink yourself to prove your loyalty,” I told the audience. “Anyone who needs to make you feel small to feel powerful is not protecting your heart; they are controlling your life.”

As the audience erupted into applause, I spotted Brendan standing alone in the back of the auditorium, looking noticeably thinner and worn out.

He waited until the crowd dispersed before approaching me slowly.

“Chloe,” he said quietly.

“Brendan,” I replied calmly.

“You look really good,” he murmured, looking bewildered by my composure.

“I’m doing very well,” I answered directly.

“I listened to your speech,” he said, lowering his eyes. “I was cruel to you, Chloe. Extremely cruel.”

I remained silent, letting his words hang in the air.

“I mistakenly thought I was just restoring balance after what happened to Scarlett,” he stammered.

“Restoring balance because I won a competition fairly?” I asked with a sharp laugh.

“I see how terrible it sounds now,” Brendan confessed quietly.

“It always sounded terrible, Brendan,” I countered. “You just had a group of friends enabling you.”

“I lost almost all my friends because of this,” he complained bitterly.

“That isn’t an apology,” I reminded him coldly. “That is simply a consequence of your actions.”

“My father cut off my allowance, Liam refuses to talk to me, and Scarlett moved to Europe,” he rambled desperately. “My entire life fell apart.”

“My graduation was ruined, my self-esteem was shattered, and my passion for dance was nearly destroyed,” I stated firmly. “For three years, you trained me to feel guilty for things I never did.”

“I am truly sorry, Chloe,” he finally whispered.

“Sorry for which of the ninety-six acts?” I asked quietly.

“For every single one of them,” he replied, closing his eyes.

I watched him closely. He didn’t cry or cause a dramatic scene, and I was deeply relieved because I had no desire for drama.

“I don’t expect you to take me back,” he added softly.

“How thoughtful of you,” I replied sarcastically.

“Can you ever forgive me?” he asked desperately.

I thought back to the dizzy girl sitting on the clinic bench, my mother holding my hair on the bathroom floor, and the new life I had built in Arizona.

“I don’t know if forgiving you even matters,” I answered smoothly. “What matters is that I no longer need to hate you to stay away from you.”

“Does that mean it doesn’t hurt anymore?” he asked.

“It means you no longer get to decide what I do with my life,” I said, picking up my bag and turning toward the exit.

“Chloe,” he called out one last time. “Were you actually happy after you walked away from me?”

I looked down the long hallway, thought of everything I had overcome, and smiled.

“I am learning to be happy without asking for anyone’s permission,” I said clearly, walking away for good.

Before flying back to Tucson, I bought a fresh pair of black dance shoes, called my mother from the terminal, and told her the encounter felt far less intense than I had feared.

I pulled up the revenge folder on my phone one last time, saved the file to an external hard drive for safekeeping, and deleted it entirely from my device.

Brendan had aimed for ninety-nine acts of revenge, believing he needed three more to destroy me, but he never realized the real story ended at number ninety-six.

That was the exact moment I stopped trying to prove I was worthy of his love, stripping him of any power over my worth forever.

Sometimes saving a relationship is impossible, and the only person you truly need to save is yourself.

THE END.

I told my mother-in-law I had an early flight the next morning and went to bed. Around midnight, I heard my bedroom door creak open. She quietly searched my suitcase, slipped something into a hidden pocket, and whispered into her phone, “It’s in her carry-on. Call airport security at 6 a.m.”

When I arrived to meet my newborn granddaughter, I found my daughter shaking in the nursery while her mother-in-law pressed a baby diaper over her mouth.
