“I should have listened,” I said.

Emily didn’t rush to comfort me.

She simply answered, “Yes.”

I deserved that.

A knock hit the groom’s room door.

“Daniel?” Rebecca called from the hallway.

I looked at the time.

The ceremony should already have started.

“I have to go,” I told Emily.

“Dad, don’t do anything because you’re angry.”

I almost laughed at the reversal.

She was the one bruised, and she was warning me to stay calm.

“I won’t.”

“Promise me.”

“I promise.”

I ended the call and copied the drive’s contents onto my laptop.

Then I put the USB back in my jacket pocket and opened the door.

Rebecca stood there alone.

Her veil was still perfect.

Her expression wasn’t.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I need to ask you something.”

She glanced toward the ballroom.

“Can this wait until after the ceremony?”

“No.”

Her jaw tightened.

I named one of the transfers from the statement.

Not all of them.

One.

I wanted to know what she would do before she knew what I had.

Rebecca blinked.

“That was a vendor payment.”

“Which vendor?”

She hesitated.

“The rental company.”

I knew immediately she was lying.

The actual rental company appeared separately on the same statement.

I asked her about a second transfer.

This time she said it had been reimbursement for wedding supplies she had bought herself.

I reached into my jacket.

Her eyes dropped to my hand.

When I pulled out the black flash drive, every bit of irritation disappeared from her face.

She knew what it was.

That mattered more than anything she could have said.

“Where did you get that?”

“Noah gave it to me.”

Her eyes lifted sharply.

“He shouldn’t have been involved in this.”

“He was involved the moment he watched you shove his mother into my kitchen counter.”

Rebecca went completely still.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Daniel, what happened with Emily was not what it looked like.”

“I watched it.”

“She was threatening me.”

“She was holding a phone.”

“She was trying to destroy our relationship.”

“You took her phone.”

“She was emotional.”

“You blocked the door.”

“I was trying to calm her down.”

I studied the woman I had planned to marry.

For months, every troubling thing had arrived wrapped in a reasonable explanation.

Emily was jealous.

Emily was grieving.

Emily misunderstood money.

Emily was too protective.

Emily wanted control.

There was always another explanation, and every explanation had required me to distrust my daughter a little more.

Rebecca reached for my arm.

I stepped back.

Her hand fell.

“Daniel, please. We have ninety people sitting in there.”

“I know.”

“My family flew in.”

“I know.”

“We have paid for everything.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t destroy this because of one fight.”

I looked at her.

“This isn’t about one fight.”

She opened her mouth, but I continued.

“The money is separate from what happened to Emily. The messages are separate from the money. And the fact that you lied to me thirty seconds ago is separate from all of it.”

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“You went through my private messages?”

That question settled something inside me.

Not because privacy didn’t matter.

Because it was the first thing she chose to defend.

Not Emily.

Not Noah.

Not the transfers.

Her privacy.

“I am not marrying you today,” I said.

Rebecca stared at me.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

“You’re embarrassed and angry.”

“I am both.”

“You’ll regret humiliating us in front of everyone.”

“I am not going into that room to humiliate you.”

“Then what are you going to tell them?”

“The wedding isn’t happening.”

She looked toward the ballroom doors as though the waiting guests might somehow pull the day back into place.

Then she stepped closer.

“You cannot do this to me after everything I put into this wedding.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Not everything we had built.

Not everything we meant to each other.

Everything I put into this wedding.

For the first time, I wondered whether the ceremony itself had become more important to her than the marriage.

Rebecca tried a different approach.

“Talk to me privately tonight. We can postpone the ceremony for an hour.”

“No.”

“Twenty minutes.”

“No.”

“Daniel, think about what people will say.”

I almost answered that I had spent too much time thinking about appearances already.

Instead, I said the only thing that mattered.

“My daughter was afraid I wouldn’t believe her.”

Rebecca’s expression shifted.

“She has been trying to turn you against me for months.”

“And I believed you.”

That stopped her.

I felt no satisfaction in saying it.

“I believed you when you said she was struggling with my remarriage. I believed you when you said she was overreacting about the accounts. I believed you often enough that she stopped trusting me with the truth.”

Rebecca looked away.

Then she said, “I never meant for her to get hurt.”

It was the first admission she had made.

Not a full one.

But enough.

“What did you mean to do?”

She rubbed her thumb against the side of her hand.

“I needed time.”

“For what?”

“To fix the money.”

There was the center of it.

“Get up, you lazy cow! You think being pregnant makes you a queen? Get downstairs and cook for my parents NOW!” my husband screamed at 5 a.m. as he dragged me out of bed. His parents sat downstairs laughing while I collapsed in pain. What none of them realized was that, before everything went black, I managed to send one desperate text. Five minutes later, someone kicked in the front door.

My husband invited his boss to dinner, but just before he arrived, he looked at me with disgust and whispered, “Stay in the bedroom. I’m ashamed to have you seen like this. If my boss sees you, you’ll ruin my promotion.” I cooked the meal, served their drinks, and stayed silent.
