Eleanor spotted me first. Her smug expression completely froze. Then, pure irritation rapidly replaced her surprise.
“You have a lot of nerve showing your face here.”
“I received an invitation in the mail.”
“You should have stayed home.”
I smiled politely, adjusting Maya on my hip. “I strongly considered it.”
Sloane approached us, one hand resting protectively on her stomach. She wore a ridiculously expensive custom Vera Wang gown that practically blinded people beneath the venue lights.
“I really hope you’re finally ready to move on.”
“Oh, I already have.”
She looked down at Maya with pity. “What a crying shame she’ll have to grow up without a real father.”
Before I even needed to answer, Carter appeared.
His bespoke tuxedo fit him perfectly. Raw, unchecked confidence radiated from his every step.
“I honestly didn’t think you’d actually show up.”
“I just wanted to offer my congratulations.”
He let out a booming laugh. “Well, I appreciate that.”
He glanced down briefly at the envelope tucked securely beneath Maya’s knit blanket.
“What’s that?”
“A wedding gift.”
Eleanor chuckled darkly. “How surprisingly thoughtful.”
The ushers began directing guests to their seats.
The lavish ceremony started exactly on schedule. Carter beamed proudly through every single vow. Sloane dabbed at her eyes, wiping away carefully practiced tears. Everyone erupted into applause when the officiant pronounced them husband and wife.
The reception quickly exploded into a massive celebration.
Crystal champagne flutes clinked. A live jazz band filled the ballroom.
After an hour, Carter stood up and tapped his glass with a fork.
“I’d like to personally thank everyone for supporting Sloane and me as we begin the most important chapter of our lives.”
The crowd roared with applause.
“My son is going to someday inherit everything I’ve built.”
That was exactly my cue.
Still holding Maya securely in my arms, I stood up slowly from my table near the back.
Hundreds of eyes instantly turned toward me.
“I almost forgot,” I said, my voice projecting clearly as I offered a gentle smile. “Your wedding gift.”
I walked calmly across the center of the silent ballroom.
Carter accepted the sealed envelope from my hand with a smug, patronizing grin.
“You really didn’t have to do this.”
“I know.”
He broke the gold wax seal. He pulled out the first printed page. He read the bolded heading.
His arrogant smile vanished in an instant.
All the color drained from his face so rapidly that several nearby executives exchanged highly confused looks.
Sloane leaned in closer, her brow furrowed. “Baby, what is it?”
Carter didn’t answer her. His hands actually began to visibly shake.
Eleanor impatiently snatched the document right out of his grip.
The exact second her eyes landed on the words Permanent Vasectomy Confirmation, the crystal champagne glass slipped through her fingers and shattered violently across the polished marble floor.
The jazz band abruptly stopped playing.
And for the very first time that evening…
The grand celebration fell completely, utterly silent.
