“You have made this into a nightmare,” she said.
I looked at my daughter sleeping beneath a thin hospital blanket.
“No.”
“Carla made a mistake.”
“She broke Lily’s leg.”
“She did not mean to.”
“You were there.”
My mother went quiet for half a second.
Then she used the sentence that finally ended any temptation I had to soften the boundary.
“She deserved to be corrected.”
