“Family should help family. Please come to my house tomorrow for dinner. Seven o’clock. Everyone will be there.”

“Finally, you’re learning.”

Suspicion crossed her face.

“Why?”

“Because I think we should talk about sharing responsibilities fairly.”

She smirked.

“Finally, you’re learning.”

“Make something the kids will eat.”

She herded the children toward the door.

Before leaving, she called back, “Make something the kids will eat.”

The door shut.

Mom whispered, “What are you planning?”

I picked up the spilled cereal bowl.

The next morning, I called my husband, Mark, before work.

“Nothing cruel.”

“Kate.”

“I just want Rachel to understand consent.”

The next morning, I called my husband, Mark, before work.

He listened without interrupting, which told me Rachel’s behavior did not surprise him.

“What do you need from me?”

“How often has she been doing this?” he asked.

“I don’t know yet. Mom has a kitchen calendar. I’m checking tonight.”

Mark sighed.

“Rachel will explode.”

“Probably.”

By lunch, Aunt Linda had agreed to help.

“What do you need from me?”

“Backup. And the biggest poster board you can find.”

By lunch, Aunt Linda had agreed to help.

Uncle Paul laughed for almost a minute before volunteering his name.

Two cousins offered to contribute imaginary obligations.

By 6:30 the next evening, nearly every adult relative sat around my dining table.

Nobody wanted revenge.

Everyone wanted the same thing: for Rachel to feel what it was like to have her time assigned without permission.

By 6:30 the next evening, nearly every adult relative sat around my dining table.

Behind them, taped across the wall, hung an enormous calendar titled “THE FAMILY FAVOR PLAN.”

Rachel’s name covered almost every weekend for three months.

Two weekends were assigned to our cousin’s four children.

One Saturday said: Drive Uncle Paul to his appointments.

Another said: Take Aunt Linda grocery shopping.

A third read: Cook meals for Mom.

Two weekends were assigned to our cousin’s four children.

Mark checked the tape.

Rachel arrived twelve minutes late and opened the door without knocking.

Mom twisted a napkin in her lap.

“Remember,” I said, “nobody expects her to do any of this.”

Aunt Linda nodded.

“We only want her to listen.”

Rachel arrived twelve minutes late and opened the door without knocking.

Her scream stopped every conversation.

“Sorry, traffic was—”

She saw the table, the relatives, and the calendar.

Her scream stopped every conversation.

“What is that?”

She marched closer and read the first few boxes.

“You volunteered me for three months without asking?”

“Why is my name everywhere?”

Nobody answered immediately.

She turned on me.

“Did you do this?”

“We all helped.”

“That is exactly the question Mom has been afraid to ask you.”

“You volunteered me for three months without asking?”

“That is exactly the question Mom has been afraid to ask you.”

Rachel looked at Mom, then back at me.

“This is ridiculous.”

“It’s uncomfortable,” I said. “There is a difference.”

“I can’t spend every weekend serving everybody.”

Rachel jabbed one finger toward the calendar.

“I have children. I have a job. I can’t spend every weekend serving everybody.”

Aunt Linda leaned forward.

“Exactly.”

Rachel frowned.

“You know what retirement means? It means your time finally belongs to you.”

Linda continued.

“You know what retirement means? It means your time finally belongs to you.”

“It does not mean everyone else gets first claim.”

Rachel crossed her arms.

“This is different. Your mother loves my kids.”

“How often have you left them with her lately?”

Mom spoke softly.

“I do love them.”

Rachel spread her hands.

“There. See?”

Mom looked down.

“Occasionally.”

Mark said, “How often have you left them with her lately?”

“Occasionally.”

“Define occasionally.”

Rachel hesitated.

“Maybe once a week.”

“Eight weeks. Nineteen visits.”

I walked to the kitchen and returned with Mom’s calendar.

“She marks the days she takes her medication. She also wrote your drop-offs beside them.”

I opened it on the table.

“Eight weeks. Nineteen visits.”

Rachel stared.

“Tuesday, seven forty-eight until six fifteen. Thursday, eight ten until five forty.”

“That cannot be right.”

I read dates aloud.

“Tuesday, seven forty-eight until six fifteen. Thursday, eight ten until five forty. Saturday, nine o’clock until dinner.”

Mark looked at his sister.

“Those are not one-hour favors.”

Mom placed both hands on the table.

Rachel flushed.

“Mom could have refused.”

The room became still.

Mom placed both hands on the table.

“I should have,” she said. “Starting now, I will.”

For the first time, she looked less angry than uncertain.

Rachel blinked.

For the first time, she looked more uncertain than anything.

“So what is this? An intervention?”

“A demonstration,” I said.

I pulled the calendar from the wall and laid it flat.

Uncle Paul removed his appointment card.

“Nobody expects you to complete these tasks.”

My husband laughed when my 75-year-old mother complained that her stomach was burning. “She’s just trying to get your money,” he said. I ignored him and secretly took her to the hospital. But when the doctor examined her scan, he locked the door and showed me what had been hidden inside her body. Minutes later, my husband came rushing in, pale and desperate.
