PART 3

For several seconds, no one moved.

The attic seemed to shrink around us, every cardboard box, every old chair, every slanted beam pressing closer as I stared at the photograph in my hand.

His first mother.

Three words.

Not a sentence.

Not an explanation.

Just enough truth to turn the air inside my lungs into stone.

Miles stood beside Tessa, clutching the sleeve of her borrowed sweater. His small face had gone pale under the dusty attic light.

“Dad?” he asked softly. “What does that mean?”

I could not answer.

Because I did not know how to explain a sentence that had just split our family history in two.

Tessa took the photograph from my trembling hand. She studied it closely, her brow folding with confusion, then something deeper—recognition beginning before memory could catch up.

“I’ve seen her,” she whispered.

Naomi turned sharply. “The woman?”

Tessa nodded slowly. “Not in person. In a file. Years ago, at the clinic. She was one of the names connected to my father’s records.”

“What name?” I asked.

Tessa turned the photograph over again, hoping perhaps there was more written there.

There wasn’t.

Only my mother’s handwriting.

His first mother.

Naomi lowered herself onto an old trunk, as if her legs had weakened. “Mom had this. She knew.”

The words were small, but they changed everything.

My mother, who had made chicken soup when I was sick. My mother, who had sung Miles to sleep in the rocking chair by the window. My mother, who had once held my face between her hands and promised me there was no love greater than the love a parent carries for a child.

That woman had hidden a photograph in a locked chest beneath a false bottom.

I looked down at Miles.

He was watching me with frightened trust, waiting for me to be steady.

I forced myself to kneel in front of him.

“Buddy,” I said, my voice unsteady but careful, “I don’t know exactly what this means yet. But whatever we find out, you are my son. Nothing changes that.”

His eyes filled. “Was I not supposed to be?”

The question broke something in Tessa. She dropped to her knees beside him and gathered his face gently in her hands.

“You were always supposed to be loved,” she said. “That is the only thing we know for sure right now.”

Miles looked between us.

“Are you mad at me?”

“No,” I said immediately.

Tessa’s voice shook. “Never.”

He leaned into her then, and she held him with one arm while reaching for me with the other. I moved close, and for the first time since the sidewalk outside the food hall, the three of us were together not as a miracle or a mystery, but as a family trying not to fall apart.

Naomi wiped her cheeks with the heel of her hand.

“We need to keep going,” she said softly. “Whatever Mom left, she meant for you to find it.”

She was right.

The cedar chest sat open between us like a mouth that had finally decided to speak.

Beneath the photograph were more envelopes, each labeled in my mother’s careful handwriting. Some bore dates. Some bore names. One was marked only with a blue star.

Tessa reached for it, then hesitated.

“You should open that one,” she said to me.

My fingers felt clumsy as I tore the flap.

Inside was a cassette tape and a folded letter.

I stared at the tape. “We don’t have anything to play this on.”

Naomi stood quickly. “I do.”

I looked at her.

“Either you go clean my mother’s apartment right now, or tomorrow I’m asking for a divorce,” my husband snapped. He had been unemployed for six months and was living off my salary. I didn’t argue. I took the keys, walked out silently, and checked a 1,500-dollar bill. What I discovered inside my mother-in-law’s apartment turned his divorce threat against him.
