A small smile appeared on his face. It was not the smile of someone worried about a child. It was the expression of someone who believed he still had control.
His thumb moved inside his pocket.
The vibration beneath my fingers stopped.
Lily suddenly collapsed forward, gasping.
Her shaking disappeared.
Mark looked at me and said, “See, Doctor? Told you she could stop whenever she wanted.”
That sentence confirmed everything.
He was not confused.
He was testing whether I had figured it out.
I kept one hand on Lily’s back while reaching behind me toward the emergency security panel. I ignored the routine buttons and pressed the red lockdown control.
The alarm exploded through the corridor.
Heavy security doors closed around Trauma Three.
The exit locked with a metallic sound.
For the first time, Mark’s confidence disappeared.
He pulled his hand from his pocket. A small black device was clenched in his fist.
The hospital speaker announced that security had been activated and police response was on the way.
Lily slowly lifted her head.
Mark stared at the locked door.
And now he was the one trembling.
The alarm continued echoing when Mark looked down at the device in his hand. I moved Lily behind me and instructed the nurse to stay with her.
Outside the room, security officers approached. Their footsteps stopped directly outside the locked door.
Mark grabbed the handle.
Nothing happened.
He tried again with more force.
Still nothing.
Then he looked at me and lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand what you’ve just done.”
But I understood enough.
The man who had spent the entire night claiming Lily was pretending was no longer explaining her behavior. He was trying to control the outcome.
Lily held onto my sleeve. I looked at her, then at the black device in Mark’s hand.
The thing that had been hidden was finally visible.
And the person controlling it was trapped in the same room as the people he had tried to manipulate.
The speaker crackled again.
“Security team in position. Do not open the door.”
Mark stepped backward.
His eyes stayed fixed on mine.
Then the black device in his hand began to move.
But this time, everyone in the room knew exactly where the danger was coming from.
