Part 1

In every family, there’s that one person who treats your home like an all-inclusive resort but would never dream of bringing even a bag of chips. In my case, that person was my mother-in-law Brigitte. She never showed up alone, either. She came with her daughters, their children, her unsolicited opinions, and absolutely nothing to contribute.

So when they showed up empty-handed once again on the Pentecost weekend, I decided it was finally time to serve them a meal they would never forget.

My name is Anni, and after years of hosting the family barbecues, I had learned a painful truth: grilling for my husband’s relatives felt less like welcoming guests and more like running a restaurant where no one paid, no one tipped, and somehow everyone still left feeling like I owed them something.

I had been married to Bastian for seven years. We had two sweet children, a cozy house in the countryside, and a life that used to feel quiet and manageable. Then Brigitte made our house her favorite holiday destination. She had the confidence of a queen, the manners of a critic, and the self-awareness of a paper plate in an autumn storm.

Whenever she visited us, she brought her two daughters Sabine and Katrin, plus six grandchildren who seemed to multiply the moment they crossed the threshold. They arrived like a traveling carnival of noise, demands, sticky fingers, and empty hands. A few weeks before Pentecost, she called to announce her visit for the long weekend, as if she were doing me a favor.

“Anni, darling, we’re coming for Pentecost,” she said cheerfully. “The children just love your grilled ribs.” Of course they loved them. I bought the ribs. I marinated them. I grilled them. I served them. And then Brigitte sat on my patio chair and explained to me what I had done wrong. The last Easter had been another exhausting spectacle. Brigitte came through the door and immediately started rearranging my living room, as if she had been paid to redecorate the house. “This sofa would look so much better facing the window,” she said, already pushing it across the floor. “I actually like it the way it is,” I replied. “Nonsense, sweetheart. I have a good eye for these things.” She shifted our corner sofa until my coffee table was almost blocking the hallway, then stepped back as if she had just created a masterpiece. “And those roses out there,” she added. “You really should prune them.

They’re starting to look a bit wild.” Those roses were my pride. I had spent three years tending to them. But for Brigitte, everything not under her control had to be corrected. While she criticized my furniture and flowers, Sabine and Katrin laid siege to the kitchen island. They spread snacks, bags, cups, wet wipes, and toys across my clean countertops without asking. Their children ran through the house like a storm with their shoes on. Eight-year-old Tyler dripped popsicle onto my white carpet and demanded to know where the bathroom was. “Down the hall, sweetie,” I said, already reaching for the carpet cleaner. His sister Mia peeked into my pantry and whined, “Why don’t you have any good snacks in here?” The “good snacks” were, of course, the ones I always bought. The ones they never brought. The ones that magically plundered my household budget every single holiday. Outside, Brigitte called from the terrace: “Anni, the meat looks a little dry. Are you sure you’re not overcooking it?” I smiled, because screaming would have been rude. When they finally left that evening, they had devoured nearly two hundred euros’ worth of food, left trash in my garden, sticky fingerprints on my doors, and juice pouches behind the sofa. Bastian helped me load the dishwasher while I collected popsicle sticks from my flower beds. “Basti,” I said, using his nickname, “your mother moved the sofa again.” “She’s just trying to help, Nanni,” he said gently, though I could see the guilt on his face. “She also ate two hundred euros’ worth of food.” He sighed. “I know. I’ll talk to her.” But we both knew he probably wouldn’t. Bastian loved me, but he had spent his entire life not upsetting his mother. And I had spent years being patient. The next morning, Brigitte called. “Anni, darling! We had such a wonderful time yesterday. The children are still talking about the ribs.” “I’m glad they enjoyed them,” I said.

“And we’re all coming back for the Pentecost weekend,” she continued. “The whole crew. We’re making a long weekend of it. Won’t that be lovely?” My hand clenched around the phone. “The whole long weekend?” I asked. “Yes! We’ll arrive Friday afternoon. Make sure you get plenty of those little grilled sausages. The children absolutely devour them. And Sabine won’t stop talking about your potato salad. Don’t forget the ribs, sweetheart. Nice and juicy, just like last time.”
