PART 1

“We already sold the house. Here are two hundred dollars. Find a cheap room on the outskirts and don’t make a scene.”

My husband Christopher left the white envelope on the kitchen table as if he had just done me a massive favor.

I had given birth less than three days earlier. My newborn daughter Harper was sleeping peacefully against my chest, my entire body ached from the labor, and I could barely stay on my feet. Beside him, my mother-in-law Brenda watched me with her arms crossed over her chest and a look of pure satisfaction that turned my stomach.

“You can still find cheap basement rooms around Scranton,” Brenda added with a cold smirk. “With a newborn baby, you don’t need any great luxuries anyway.”

I reached out with a trembling hand and opened the envelope. Inside were two crisp one-hundred-dollar bills.

I looked down at the paper bills for a moment. Then I looked up at Christopher.

And I started laughing.

It wasn’t a quiet or nervous giggle. I laughed so hard that my sore abdomen began to throb with sharp pain.

Christopher frowned, his eyes narrowing in irritation.

“What is wrong with you?” he demanded.

“Nothing at all,” I replied, catching my breath.

“Then what on earth are you laughing at?” he asked, stepping closer.

I held up the two green bills between my fingers.

“I’m laughing because you actually think these two hundred dollars can get me out of a house worth three million dollars.”

Brenda took a aggressive step toward me, pointing her finger.

“That house isn’t yours anymore, so stop dreaming!” she snapped.

“You’re actually right about that part,” I said calmly.

Christopher smiled immediately, clearly thinking I had finally accepted complete defeat.

“Then stop making things difficult and just pack your bags,” he said.

I looked him straight in the eyes without flinching.

“But there’s one small problem. The house you just sold had already…”

I stopped mid-sentence on purpose.

Christopher’s smug smile disappeared instantly. Brenda pressed her thin lips together in silence.

“Had already what?” Christopher asked, his voice shaking slightly.

For the first time in many months, I saw genuine fear creeping into his eyes.

Three weeks earlier, I still naively thought our marriage could be saved.

Christopher and I had been married for seven years. We lived in a grand two-story residence in Harrisburg, located in a quiet historic neighborhood where neighbors always greeted each other.

The sprawling property had originally belonged to my late father.

When he passed away, he left the entire estate exclusively to me in his will. Over the years, I invested my own money in extensive renovations, expanded the kitchen, redid the manicured garden, and turned that memory-filled house into the place where we planned to raise our daughter.

I often casually called it “our house” in everyday conversations.

However, legally speaking, it had never belonged to Christopher for a single day.

Everything began to change drastically during my second trimester of pregnancy.

Christopher started asking bizarre, overly specific financial questions out of nowhere.

“How much do you think the property market values this place at now?” he asked one evening.

“Where exactly do you keep the original deed and title documents?” he inquired a few days later.

“Did your dad leave any strange conditions or clauses in his will regarding the estate?” he pressed.

Then Brenda started dropping subtle hints as well whenever she came over.

One rainy afternoon, while we were sitting in the dining room, she looked around at the hardwood floors.

“A massive property like this can easily cause deep resentment between a married couple,” she remarked casually.

“What kind of resentment?” I asked, setting down my teacup.

“Well, when one person owns everything and the other has nothing to their name,” she murmured.

“Christopher has never once mentioned that it bothers him,” I pointed out.

Brenda gave me a sly, knowing smile.

“Maybe that’s just because he’s far too proud to admit it aloud to you,” she whispered.

A few days later, I walked into my father’s old home office and caught Christopher going through the metal filing cabinet.

The moment he spotted me in the doorway, he slammed the drawer shut with a loud crash.

“What are you looking for in here?” I asked, crossing my arms.

“Just looking for an old car insurance document,” he stammered, avoiding eye contact.

“That drawer only contains legal title documents for the house,” I reminded him firmly.

He didn’t offer a single word of explanation and quickly brushed past me into the hallway.

The very next morning, I picked up the phone and called Rachel Cooper, the family attorney who had handled my father’s legal estate.

After carefully reviewing all the land records, her assessment was crystal clear.

“Nora, your husband cannot sell or mortgage this property under any circumstances because it is registered solely in your maiden name,” she reassured me.

Then I paused for a moment and asked her a critical question.

“What if I sell it right now?”

Rachel stared at me through the screen during our video call in absolute silence.

“Are you completely sure you want to do that?” she asked quietly.

I placed one hand tenderly over my swollen bump.

“I need to start a fresh life where no one believes they can steal what belongs to me while I’m vulnerable,” I answered firmly.

Two weeks before my scheduled delivery date, I officially signed the final sale papers.

A wealthy couple who owned several local businesses legally purchased the entire property. The sale proceeds were immediately deposited into secure investment accounts opened solely in my name.

Christopher never suspected a single thing.

Three days after signing, I accidentally overheard a quiet conversation between him and Brenda in the garage.

“We have to lower the listing price significantly if we want a fast cash deal,” Brenda was whispering frantically.

“It doesn’t matter how low it is,” Christopher replied in a hushed tone. “When Nora is stuck in the hospital giving birth, she won’t even notice what’s happening.”

I felt as though the floor beneath my feet had suddenly dissolved.

Then Brenda asked another cold question.

“And what happens when she comes back from the hospital with the newborn?”

Christopher let out a low, heartless laugh that chilled me to the bone.

“We’ll hand her a couple hundred bucks in cash and let her figure out where to sleep,” he said.

I pressed my hand against my belly, fighting back tears of betrayal.
