“I came home two days early from my trip and found 20 of my mother’s guests eating in my house while my wife and my 5-year-old daughter washed dishes with burned hands. ‘If you don’t finish, you don’t eat,’ I heard. PART 1

“If your daughter doesn’t finish washing those dishes, neither of us will have dinner tonight,” my mother said, without imagining that I was standing less than ten meters away, listening to everything.

I had returned home to Phoenix two days earlier than planned. The technology conference in Salt Lake City had been canceled, and instead of letting anyone know, I took the first flight because I wanted to surprise my wife, Jessica, and our five-year-old daughter, Olivia.

We lived in a spacious apartment, where I, Zayden Ferris, thirty-four years old and working as a project manager, spent years believing that my home was the only place where everything was in order. I made a huge mistake.

As soon as I opened the door, I was hit by a heavy smell of roast pork, fried food, reheated oil, and expensive perfume. Then I heard loud laughter, clinking glasses, and many unfamiliar voices echoing down the hallway, which was completely covered in guest shoes.

From the living room, I heard my mother, Carmen, bragging loudly to the group.

“My son bought me this brand new dress, saying that now that he’s doing so well, his mother should look good too, and in this apartment, one truly lives like a queen,” she said.

My mother had moved in with us a year earlier from Baltimore, bringing her sixty-two years of age, bad knee pain, and an extraordinary knack for making me feel guilty. When she originally asked to live with us, Jessica agreed without hesitation.

Then changes began that I never wanted to face head-on. Jessica lost weight rapidly and started wearing long sleeves even when it was boiling hot outside, while Olivia, who used to run freely all over the house, would fall dead silent whenever she heard her grandmother’s footsteps.

Whenever I asked what was happening, my mother answered first.

“Your wife is simply too delicate because she doesn’t work outside the home, yet she gets tired of everything,” she would say smoothly.

I chose the most convenient explanation and ignored the signs. I walked into the living room, where almost twenty women were gathered around two large folding tables, with my mother sitting at the head wearing a bright red dress while holding a glass of wine.

“And where is your daughter-in-law?” a lady nearby asked.

Carmen smiled warmly at the guests.

“In the kitchen, right where she belongs, and the little girl is helping her too because you have to teach them properly from a very young age,” my mother replied.

The women in the room laughed in unison. I immediately looked towards the kitchen, where Jessica stood right in front of the sink, drenched in sweat with a giant mountain of dirty dishes piled high in front of her.

What completely took my breath away was standing right next to her. Olivia was standing on tiptoe on a small plastic stool, holding a heavy glass platter that was far too big for her hands.

The steaming hot water was falling directly on her tiny fingers, leaving her hands red, wrinkled, and covered in thick soap detergent froth. She was not crying at all, and that quiet endurance was the absolute worst part of the scene.

A guest carelessly dropped her empty glass on the counter next to Jessica.

“Bring me some cold hibiscus iced tea right now, and cut me a fresh bowl of watermelon,” the woman demanded loudly.

Jessica lowered her head obediently.

“Yes, I will do that right now,” Jessica whispered.

When she turned around, I caught sight of a wet, dirty bandage wrapped around her finger and an open, raw blister glistening on her wrist. I dropped my heavy suitcase onto the floor, letting the loud impact against the smooth marble floor echo through the entire apartment.

The loud laughter instantly died down, my mother turned completely pale, and my young daughter did not run over to hug me when she saw me standing there. She just gripped the heavy plate tighter and whispered softly.

“Dad, please hurry up, because if I don’t finish washing these right now, Grandma said Mom and I aren’t going to get any dinner tonight,” Olivia said.

PART 2

I walked straight past the guests into the kitchen without greeting a single person in the room. I immediately took the heavy platter away from Olivia’s trembling hands and picked her up into my arms.

When her tiny arms wrapped tightly around my neck, I felt her icy, wrinkled, and slippery fingers covered in soapy detergent.

“Dad, my hands hurt really bad,” she whispered softly into my ear, “but please don’t tell Grandma because she will get extremely mad at Mom.”

I felt something fundamental break inside my chest at her words.

“Go straight to your room right now, princess, close the door tightly, and do not come out until I come call for you,” I instructed gently.

Olivia obeyed immediately and hurried down the hall. I turned and took Jessica’s hands into mine, though she tried desperately to hide them behind her back.

“Zayden, please don’t make a big problem out of this,” Jessica pleaded softly.

That single sentence hurt me far more than any insult could have. I pulled off her thick rubber gloves, revealing hands that were cracked, raw, deeply cut, and swollen, with ruined nails and several fresh burn marks lining her forearms.

I turned around to face the crowded living room.

“This meeting is officially over, and everyone has exactly five minutes to leave my house,” I announced firmly.

Nobody moved an inch at first. A woman with short curly hair let out a dismissive giggle.

“Oh, son, don’t exaggerate like that, your mother is just teaching them proper household discipline,” she said.

“I am not your son, and this is not my mother’s apartment, as it belongs entirely to Jessica and me, so get out right now,” I shouted.

Carmen slammed her fist violently against the wooden table.

“I am your mother, and are you really going to humiliate me publicly for that useless woman?” she screamed.

“No, you are humiliating yourself,” I replied coldly.

My mother’s entire expression twisted in rage.

“That useless woman has completely turned you against your own mother,” she shrieked.

In a fit of rage, she grabbed a heavy pot full of boiling meat broth that had just come out of the kitchen and hurled it straight at Jessica’s face. I didn’t hesitate for a single second and stepped directly in front of my wife.

The scalding hot liquid splashed violently over my right shoulder, my chest, and my neck, making Jessica scream in absolute horror. The silence that followed in the room was completely brutal, and my mother instantly dropped the heavy pot onto the floor.

I stared straight at her, and for the very first time in my life, I didn’t see the woman who had raised me, but rather someone fully capable of hurting my family without a shred of remorse.

“Get out,” I ordered sternly, “all of you leave immediately.”

The terrified guests began frantically grabbing their purses and coats, emptying the apartment entirely in less than three minutes. Carmen started sobbing loudly, beating her chest dramatically while repeating that I was a terrible son, but I ignored her completely and dialed 911.

When the emergency paramedics and two police officers arrived shortly after, Jessica was still visibly trembling in the living room. One of the paramedics gently asked her to roll up her sleeves so he could check her injuries.

She hesitated nervously before looking at me.

“Show them everything,” I told her softly, “you don’t have to protect anyone in this house anymore.”

Jessica slowly rolled up her long sleeves, exposing a painful mixture of old scars and raw, fresh burn marks spanning her arms. The paramedic pointed directly to a deep, terrible burn mark situated near her left wrist.

“How exactly did this injury happen?” the paramedic asked with a frown.

Jessica glanced briefly at my terrified mother before speaking up.

“It happened early this morning when she asked me to test if the stove pot was hot enough, and when I reached for a spoon, she grabbed my bare wrist and forced it against the hot metal edge, telling me that was how I would learn to do things right,” Jessica explained quietly.

One of the police officers stopped writing mid-sentence and looked up, while a wave of deep nausea hit my stomach.

Right at that moment, the bedroom door opened softly. Olivia came out barefoot and ran quickly over to where I was standing.

“Dad,” she whispered loudly, “tell the officer to check Grandma’s locked drawer in her bedroom too.”

Carmen jerked her head up instantly.

“What drawer are you talking about?” my mother snapped angrily.

My daughter looked up at me with eyes completely filled with fear.

“The drawer she always keeps locked, because she keeps Mom’s scary videos in there and says that if you ever watch them, you will kick both of us out onto the street forever,” Olivia said.

“Get up, you lazy cow! You think being pregnant makes you a queen? Get downstairs and cook for my parents NOW!” my husband screamed at 5 a.m. as he dragged me out of bed. His parents sat downstairs laughing while I collapsed in pain. What none of them realized was that, before everything went black, I managed to send one desperate text. Five minutes later, someone kicked in the front door.
