“She made the lemonade. She brought Lucy that cup herself.”

Vanessa answered quickly.

“Because she is my niece and the birthday girl.”

Michael moved the cup away from everyone else.

“Nobody touches this until the paramedics arrive.”

That was when another detail returned to Allison.

Vanessa had not poured Lucy’s drink from the large dispenser in front of the guests.

She had come from the kitchen carrying the unicorn cup already filled.

At the time, it had seemed like a small thing.

Now it was part of a sequence.

The drink had tasted strange to Lucy. She had described it as tasting “like medicine.”

Then she had collapsed.

And Vanessa had been the person who brought her that cup.

The ambulance arrived moments later.

While paramedics carried Lucy outside, Vanessa grabbed Allison’s arm.

“If you start accusing people, you could destroy this family.”

Allison pulled away.

What stayed with her was not simply the warning.

Vanessa had not asked whether Lucy was going to be okay.

She had not asked what the doctors thought.

She had warned Allison about accusations.

At the hospital, Allison stayed focused on Lucy’s treatment while Michael helped preserve the details surrounding the drink.

The family-business questions suddenly felt connected to something much more immediate, but Allison refused to make that connection without evidence.

She had spent too many years being told that suspicion was the same thing as proof.

She would not make that mistake now.

Then hospital staff showed them security footage from their house.

Allison watched the screen.

Vanessa appeared again.

She had returned to the house after everyone had left for the hospital.

The footage showed her walking toward the party table.

She leaned over it.

Then she reached for something.

Her hand closed around the item, and she carried it away.

Allison watched the sequence again.

Vanessa had returned for something she had left behind.

That fact mattered because the party table was where Lucy’s drink had been handled.

But the footage did not identify the object clearly enough to tell Allison what Vanessa had taken.

It also did not establish whether the item had anything to do with Lucy’s collapse.

That distinction mattered.

Allison knew the difference between a suspicious sequence and a proven conclusion.

Still, the sequence changed what she could reasonably ask next.

Vanessa had brought Lucy a drink that tasted unusual.

Lucy had collapsed thirty seconds before her birthday candles.

Michael had isolated the cup.

Vanessa had immediately warned Allison about accusations.

And later, Vanessa had returned to the house and removed something from the party table.

Each fact could have had an innocent explanation on its own.

Together, they demanded answers.

Allison did not confront Vanessa in the hospital hallway.

She did not make a speech to the family.

She did not accuse her mother or Colin simply because their earlier behavior now looked different.

Instead, she went back to the details she could verify.

The cup.

The drink.

The timing.

The footage.

And the item Vanessa had taken.

Michael understood why Allison was being careful.

He had seen what happened when fear took over a medical emergency. The priority was Lucy’s care, not winning an argument with the family.

But Allison also understood something else.

My family laughed when I arrived alone at my sister’s wedding, and my father made sure everyone heard him say, “She couldn’t even find a date.” A few minutes later, after he shoved me into the fountain and the applause finally faded, I looked him straight in the eye.
