This time he pulled out a second photograph.

He placed it on the table.

I looked down.

It was another picture of Emily.

Except she wasn’t five anymore.

She looked about eight.

My knees nearly gave out.

The little girl in the photograph had Emily’s eyes.

Emily’s smile.

Emily’s tiny dimple beneath her left cheek.

But there was something else.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

She’s alive.

I covered my mouth.

“Where is she?”

Dad began crying.

“I don’t know.”

I turned toward him.

“Then why do you have this?”

“Because Carl sent it to me.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

I stared at him.

Three years.

He had known for three years.

My father had carried this secret for three years.

I felt something inside me break.

“You knew?”

“I knew she might be alive.”

“You knew my daughter might be alive, and you said nothing?”

“I promised Carl.”

“You promised him?”

My voice cracked.

“What about me?”

Dad stood up.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But you didn’t!”

“I wanted to every single day.”

“Then why?”

“Because Carl believed they were watching you.”

I froze.

“Who?”

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“Where was Carl?”

Dad looked toward the photograph.

“Somewhere overseas.”

“Doing what?”

“I don’t know.”

I sank into the chair.

For thirteen years, I’d hated Carl.

I had told myself he was a coward.

A man who couldn’t bear the death of one child and abandoned the other.

I’d convinced myself that he had chosen his own pain over his family.

But now everything I’d believed was beginning to collapse.

I looked at the second photograph again.

There was something written beneath the date.

A name.

Evelyn Hart.

“Who’s Evelyn Hart?”

Dad’s expression changed.

And that frightened me more than anything he’d said so far.

“You’ve heard that name before.”

“No, I haven’t.”

“Yes, you have.”

He stared at me.

“You met her the week before Emily died.”

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

Then suddenly—

A woman standing outside the hospital.

Dark hair.

Gray coat.

She’d spoken to me while I was waiting for the doctor.

She’d asked me if I was Emily’s mother.

I’d thought she was another patient’s relative.

I had forgotten her completely.

But Dad hadn’t.

“She was there,” he whispered.

“Who was she?”

Dad looked toward the locked front door.

Then he whispered:

“She was the last person Carl saw before he disappeared.”

I felt a chill move through me.

And then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I stared at the screen.

Dad stared too.

Neither of us moved.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, I answered.

“Hello?”

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then I heard breathing.

A woman’s voice whispered:

“You shouldn’t have opened the box.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who is this?”

The woman didn’t answer.

Instead, she said something that made my entire world stop.

“She isn’t Emily.”

The call ended.

I looked at Dad.

He was already crying.

And for the first time in thirteen years, I realized something terrifying.

Maybe finding my daughter wasn’t the real mystery.

Maybe the real mystery was discovering who had been pretending to be her.

Part 3 — The Truth
I didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did Dad.

We sat at the kitchen table until sunrise, surrounded by photographs, documents, and memories I’d spent thirteen years trying to bury.

At six in the morning, Dad finally told me everything he knew.

Carl had begun questioning Emily’s death almost immediately.

The hospital records didn’t match.

The time of death had been changed.

The doctor who had originally spoken to Carl disappeared from the hospital shortly afterward.

And most disturbing of all, the hospital had no complete record of Emily’s identification.

I told my mother-in-law I had an early flight the next morning and went to bed. Around midnight, I heard my bedroom door creak open. She quietly searched my suitcase, slipped something into a hidden pocket, and whispered into her phone, “It’s in her carry-on. Call airport security at 6 a.m.”
