My husband left me after we lost one of our twin daughters …

Not the pale, frightened smile I’d remembered from those terrible final hours in the hospital.

This was a completely ordinary smile.

A happy smile.

A smile belonging to a little girl who believed she was going to grow up.

I stared at my father.

“Where did you get this?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached for the sealed envelope.

“That letter is from Carl.”

My heart stopped.

For thirteen years, I had imagined hundreds of things Carl might say if he ever came back.

An apology.

An explanation.

Maybe even an admission that he’d made the biggest mistake of his life.

But I had never imagined this.

I looked at my name written across the envelope.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Carl.

My fingers trembled as I broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

There were only a few lines.

I read them once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

If you’re reading this, Lily is eighteen.

I promised your father I wouldn’t come back before then.

I need you to know that I never stopped loving you or Lily.

And Emily did not die the way you were told.

Please don’t hate your father.

He was protecting Lily.

I was protecting both of you.

I dropped the letter onto the table.

“Protecting us from what?”

Dad closed his eyes.

“Carl.”

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

“He told me that if you knew the truth immediately after Emily disappeared, you might lose Lily too.”

My entire body went cold.

“Disappeared?”

Dad looked at me.

He finally said the word I’d been terrified to hear.

“Emily didn’t die.”

The room became completely silent.

I could hear the refrigerator humming.

I could hear the clock ticking on the wall.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

“No.”

Dad’s eyes filled with tears.

“She was alive when they took her.”

I stood so quickly that the chair scraped violently across the floor.

“Who took her?”

Dad didn’t answer.

“Dad!”

He flinched.

“Who took my daughter?”

His lips trembled.

“We don’t know.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

For thirteen years, I’d believed I had buried my child.

I’d stood beside a tiny coffin.

I’d watched them lower it into the ground.

I’d spent countless nights crying over an empty bedroom.

I’d kept one of Emily’s stuffed animals in a box because I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away.

I’d visited a grave.

I’d whispered apologies to a stone.

And now my father was telling me that none of it had been real?

I grabbed the photograph again.

“Then whose body did I bury?”

Dad’s face crumpled.

“I don’t know.”

I stepped backward.

“You don’t know?”

“I only knew what Carl told me.”

“What did Carl tell you?”

Dad wiped his eyes.

“He said there had been a mistake at the hospital.”

“What kind of mistake?”

“A child had been declared dead.”

My mouth went dry.

Dad continued.

“Carl had been there when it happened. He didn’t believe the doctors. He said something felt wrong. He demanded answers.”

I remembered that day.

Carl had looked broken.

I’d assumed he was simply drowning in grief.

But suddenly I remembered something else.

He hadn’t cried at the funeral.

He had barely spoken.

I’d thought he was numb.

Maybe he had known something I didn’t.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

Dad looked at me with unbearable sadness.

“Because someone threatened him.”

My stomach twisted.

“Who?”

“He never told me.”

I stared at him.

“Then why did he leave?”

Dad’s voice became quieter.

“Because he believed that if he stayed, whoever was behind it would come after Lily.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It didn’t make sense to me either.”

“Then why did you help him?”

“Because he showed me something.”

Dad reached into the box again.

Three months after divorcing the only woman I had ever loved, a hospital called me at 10:03 p.m. to tell me she had been found unconscious with a severe head injury. I told my mother-in-law I had an early flight the next morning and went to bed. Around midnight, I heard my bedroom door creak open. She quietly searched my suitcase, slipped something into a hidden pocket, and whispered into her phone, “It’s in her carry-on. Call airport security at 6 a.m.”

My husband ignored 17 calls while I was trying to get home from the hospital with our newborn daughter. Just five days after giving birth, I arrived at our mansion alone and found another woman in our bedroom, wearing my bathrobe.
