Part 2: My Husband Knew Someone Wanted Him Dead

For a moment, the pain faded beneath the weight of what I’d just heard. The man who had pulled me from the edge of death wasn’t simply a passing truck driver. He calmly introduced himself as Martin Vale, a private investigator and former Knoxville police detective, before explaining that my late husband had hired him years earlier.

“Your husband hired me three years ago.”

“Before he died.”

“To find out whether you were planning to kill him.”

I could barely process the words.

“My husband…”

“Daniel thought I wanted him dead?”

Martin studied me carefully before answering.

“At first…”

“He thought someone did.”

“He suspected it might be you.”

The confession hurt more deeply than the twisted metal trapping my body. Daniel and I had been married for nine years, and through every stage of his cancer I had remained beside him. I memorized medication schedules, stayed awake in hospital rooms, held him whenever the treatments became unbearable, and listened to his fears about leaving Evan behind.

Yet all that time, he had secretly wondered whether I was trying to kill him.

Martin quietly explained that Daniel’s suspicions hadn’t begun with the cancer. Months before his diagnosis, Daniel suffered unexplained dizzy spells, memory lapses, and frightening episodes of confusion. He believed someone inside the house had been tampering with his medication but couldn’t prove it.

“He never told me.”

“No.”

“Because whoever was doing it had access to your home.”

Fragments of forgotten memories suddenly came rushing back. I remembered Daniel wandering through the kitchen late at night, unable to remember why he’d gotten out of bed. I remembered finding him standing silently in front of an open cabinet while Evan watched from the kitchen island with an untouched bowl of cereal.

Back then, I thought my stepson was worried about his father.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

“What did you discover?”

“At first?”

“Nothing.”

“You had no affairs.”

“No secret debts.”

“No suspicious insurance policies.”

“You were exhausted, but you were taking care of him.”

“Then why didn’t he tell me?”

“Because by the time I cleared you…”

“He no longer trusted his own mind.”

“And Evan found out about me.”

Hearing my stepson’s name changed everything.

“Evan was only fourteen.”

“Old enough to lie.”

“Young enough that everyone underestimated him.”

Martin lowered his voice even further before revealing the truth Daniel had uncovered shortly before his death. Daniel had secretly rewritten his will six months earlier, leaving me the family cabin, the house, and complete control of Evan’s trust until he turned twenty-five.

“I already knew about the will.”

“What you don’t know…”

“…is why he changed it.”

Martin explained that Daniel had begun suspecting his own son.

“No.”

“He found crushed pills in Evan’s backpack.”

“His own medication.”

“He asked me whether a child could slowly poison a parent without anyone noticing.”

I couldn’t accept what I was hearing. Every memory of Evan as a grieving little boy suddenly rearranged itself into something far more disturbing. His refusal to let Daniel out of his sight, the constant need to control every conversation, the way he insisted on bringing his father water and medication, and the growing resentment he directed toward me no longer looked like grief.

They looked deliberate.

“What did Daniel ask him?”

“He asked whether Evan had ever been angry enough to hurt someone.”

“What did he say?”

“Only if they were already leaving.”

The answer sent a chill through me that no mountain rain ever could. Daniel hadn’t been protecting the cabin from an irresponsible teenager.

He’d been protecting me.

Before I could say another word, Martin reached into his jacket and pulled out a small digital recorder with a blinking red light.

“What’s that?”

“A recorder.”

“It’s been running since I left my truck.”

“You recorded him?”

“Enough.”

I told my mother-in-law I had an early flight the next morning and went to bed. Around midnight, I heard my bedroom door creak open. She quietly searched my suitcase, slipped something into a hidden pocket, and whispered into her phone, “It’s in her carry-on. Call airport security at 6 a.m.”
