Part 1: My Stepson Sent Us Over the Cliff

The brake pedal failed halfway down Miller’s Ridge Road.

At first, I thought my foot had slipped on the wet floor mat, but when I pressed the pedal again, it dropped uselessly to the floor. Rain coated the narrow mountain road, and the Smokies disappeared beneath layers of fog as panic rushed through me.

“Evan.”

“Something’s wrong.”

My seventeen-year-old stepson sat quietly beside me with one hand resting on the dashboard and his phone in the other. Instead of looking frightened, he turned toward me with an expression so cold it barely seemed human.

“I know.”

The sharp curve arrived before I could react. I pulled the emergency brake with all my strength, but the Subaru fishtailed across the soaked pavement, smashed through the rusted guardrail, and plunged into the valley below. The car rolled violently down the embankment until everything finally stopped in twisted metal, shattered glass, and unbearable silence.

Blood filled my mouth as I struggled to breathe. My left leg was pinned beneath the crushed dashboard, every breath scraped through my ribs, and rain poured through the broken windshield. I turned toward the passenger seat, expecting to see Evan trapped beside me.

Instead, it was empty.

His seat belt had been sliced clean through.

A moment later, footsteps crunched across the gravel above. Relief flooded me when Evan appeared at the shattered window, but it disappeared the instant I noticed the box cutter in his hand.

“Evan…”

He stared down at me without emotion.

“You should’ve sold the cabin.”

“Dad promised Mom half before he died.”

“You kept everything.”

“That’s not true.”

He smiled faintly.

“It will be.”

“Once they find the note.”

Then he calmly raised his phone and took a photograph of me trapped inside the wreck before disappearing as headlights approached from the road above.

A large diesel truck pulled onto the shoulder, and within seconds a gray-bearded man wearing a bright rain jacket climbed carefully down the muddy slope. He knelt beside the shattered windshield, quickly examined my injuries, and quietly leaned close enough that only I could hear him.

“Ma’am…”

“Don’t move.”

“He cut the brakes.”

“My stepson…”

The stranger glanced toward the road, then lowered his voice even further.

“Play dead.”

“He’s still watching.”

I forced myself to remain perfectly still while rain drummed against the crushed roof. Every heartbeat felt louder than the storm as I fought the urge to move or cry out. Above us, Evan waited silently, watching to see whether I would survive.

Pretending to check my pulse, the trucker spoke loudly enough for Evan to hear.

“She ain’t answering me!”

“You know her?”

“My stepmother.”

“She lost control.”

“I tried to grab the wheel…”

“You hurt?”

“No.”

“I got thrown clear.”

Every word was a lie, but he delivered them without hesitation. When the trucker offered to radio for help, Evan hesitated instead of leaving. After a long silence, he asked the question that made my blood run cold.

“Can you check if she’s really dead?”

The trucker refused, insisting Evan stay where he was because the hillside was too dangerous. For several tense seconds, neither of them moved.

Then Evan laughed quietly.

“You’re not a trucker.”

“I’ve seen you before.”

“At the diner outside Gatlinburg.”

The man bent close enough that his beard brushed my cheek.

“Do not react.”

Only after Evan finally drove away did the stranger kneel beside me again. His expression changed completely as he looked into my eyes.

“My name isn’t Bill Porter.”

“And I didn’t stop here by accident.”

I struggled to focus through the blood and rain.

He looked at me with quiet sympathy before delivering words that made the wreck feel insignificant.

“Your husband hired me three years ago.”

“Before he died.”

“To find out whether you were planning to kill him.”

“Get up, you lazy cow! You think being pregnant makes you a queen? Get downstairs and cook for my parents NOW!” my husband screamed at 5 a.m. as he dragged me out of bed. His parents sat downstairs laughing while I collapsed in pain. What none of them realized was that, before everything went black, I managed to send one desperate text. Five minutes later, someone kicked in the front door.

My husband invited his boss to dinner, but just before he arrived, he looked at me with disgust and whispered, “Stay in the bedroom. I’m ashamed to have you seen like this. If my boss sees you, you’ll ruin my promotion.” I cooked the meal, served their drinks, and stayed silent.
