Method
How to Make Char Siu Chicken
- In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, Chinese five spice powder, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Whisk until well blended for a deliciously aromatic marinade.
- Place the chicken thighs in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to soak in all those rich flavors.
- Preheat your grill or oven to medium-high heat (about 375°F/190°C). This ensures a proper sear and caramelization on your chicken.
- Remove the chicken from the marinade (reserve the marinade). Grill the chicken for about 6-7 minutes on each side until they develop a lovely char and reach an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C).
- In the last few minutes of cooking, brush the reserved marinade onto the chicken for a sticky, glossy finish. This will enhance the flavor and add that signature look.
- Once cooked, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes. This helps to lock in the juices for extra tenderness. Slice it into pieces just before serving.
- Optional: Garnish with finely chopped green onions for a fresh crunch.
