This cheese toast is the perfect proof that you can conjure up something incredibly delicious with just a few ingredients. The pictures show beautifully golden-brown slices of toast with a thick, melted layer of cheese that spreads slightly when cut, creating a truly satisfying experience. This is exactly what a perfect cheese toast should look like: crispy on the outside, soft and moist on the inside, with an intense cheesy flavor.
Sometimes it’s the simplest dishes that delight us the most. A perfectly made cheese toast falls squarely into this category: crispy bread, golden brown on the outside, and a generous layer of melted cheese that remains wonderfully creamy on the inside. This interplay of textures and flavors has made cheese toast a true classic for generations, one that never goes out of style. Whether as a quick breakfast, a snack between meals, after a long day at work, or as a simple meal for the whole family, cheese toast is always a good choice.
Ingredients (for 4–6 cheese toasts)
8–12 slices of toast (depending on desired portion size)
120–180 g grated cheese (Cheddar, Gouda, or a mixture)
40–60 g softened butter
Optional:
a drizzle of Worcestershire sauce or a few drops of hot sauce
1 tsp mustard for extra flavor
a pinch of garlic powder or paprika
a pinch of salt and pepper
Preparation
Prepare the bread
Place the slices of toast on a clean work surface. Spread one side of each slice thinly and evenly with butter. This layer of butter will later give the bread its beautiful golden-brown color and crispy texture.
Prepare the cheese
Grate the cheese fresh, if possible. Freshly grated cheese melts more evenly and becomes creamier than pre-grated cheese from a package. If you like, you can season the cheese with a small pinch of pepper or paprika.
Optional seasoning
For a more savory version, you can spread a very thin layer of mustard on the unbuttered side of the bread slices or add a few drops of Worcestershire sauce over the cheese. But be careful: less is more, so that the cheese flavor remains the star.
Air fryer instructions
Assemble
Place the bread slices buttered-side down. Generously spread the grated cheese on top. If you like, you can sandwich two slices together – the pictures show both open and double versions.
Place in the basket
Place the toasts side by side in the air fryer basket. Make sure they don’t overlap as much as possible so that the air can circulate well and everything browns evenly.
Bake: Set the air fryer to about 180–190°C and bake the cheese toasts for 5–7 minutes, until:
the cheese is completely melted,
it’s bubbling gently,
and golden to lightly browned on top,
while the bread is nicely crispy on the bottom.
Depending on the appliance, the time may vary slightly. It’s best to check briefly after 4–5 minutes.
