The foreman’s potato landed in the mud beside her shoe.

The woman looked down at it.

Then she bent, picked it up, wiped the dirt against her skirt, and placed it carefully on the porch rail.

“I didn’t ask you to feed me,” she said.

The foreman laughed.

“No?”

“I asked to cook.”

That made the bunkhouse erupt again.

There were fourteen men on Broken Spur Ranch that afternoon, and every one of them had been complaining about supper since their cook disappeared with a whiskey salesman three days earlier.

They had burned beans twice.

Ruined twelve pounds of beef.

And somehow turned biscuits into objects hard enough to hammer nails.

Still, Wade Mercer—the foreman—looked at the woman as though hunger itself had made her foolish.

“What makes you think you can cook for ranch hands?”

She glanced toward the blackened pot visible through the kitchen doorway.

“What makes you think you can?”

Several men coughed to hide laughter.

Wade’s face tightened.

The woman continued.

“Give me whatever you planned to ruin tonight.”

“What’s your name?”

“Mae.”

“Mae what?”

“Carver.”

“And where’s your husband, Mrs. Carver?”

Her expression changed.

“Dead.”

That ended some of the amusement.

Not Wade’s.

“Then you ought to find widow work in town.”

“I tried.”

“No one hire you?”

“No.”

“Wonder why.”

Mae looked directly at him.

“Because people like deciding what a person is worth before they see what she can do.”

A voice came from behind them.

“Let her cook.”

Everyone turned.

Nathaniel Cross stood near the barn.

Thirty-nine years old.

Owner of Broken Spur.

He had been watching long enough to hear everything.

Nathaniel was not an easy man to impress.

He inherited twelve hundred acres from his father, added another six hundred through cattle profits, and built a reputation for paying wages on time while expecting every man under him to earn them twice.

He looked at Mae.

“One meal.”

She nodded.

“If they eat it, you eat too.”

“I eat either way.”

Wade laughed.

Nathaniel looked at him.

“She cooks, she gets supper.”

The laughter stopped.

Mae asked:

“What do I have?”

Nathaniel pointed toward the kitchen.

“Whatever is there.”

She went inside.

Five minutes later, she came back out.

“That is not an answer.”

Nathaniel almost smiled.

“What do you need?”

“Beef.”

“Plenty.”

“Onions?”

“Some.”

“Flour?”

“Enough.”

“Beans?”

“Yes.”

“Coffee?”

“Always.”

“Dried apples?”

Wade scoffed.

“This a hotel?”

Mae ignored him.

Nathaniel said:

“Store room. Two sacks.”

“Good.”

“Anything else?”

She looked toward the herb patch beside the kitchen wall.

“Who planted sage?”

Nathaniel’s expression shifted.

“My mother.”

Mae looked at him for half a second too long.

Then:

“I’ll need some.”

That was the first thing he noticed.

The second happened an hour later.

“Get up, you lazy cow! You think being pregnant makes you a queen? Get downstairs and cook for my parents NOW!” my husband screamed at 5 a.m. as he dragged me out of bed. His parents sat downstairs laughing while I collapsed in pain. What none of them realized was that, before everything went black, I managed to send one desperate text. Five minutes later, someone kicked in the front door.

My husband invited his boss to dinner, but just before he arrived, he looked at me with disgust and whispered, “Stay in the bedroom. I’m ashamed to have you seen like this. If my boss sees you, you’ll ruin my promotion.” I cooked the meal, served their drinks, and stayed silent.

“I came home two days early from my trip and found 20 of my mother’s guests eating in my house while my wife and my 5-year-old daughter washed dishes with burned hands. ‘If you don’t finish, you don’t eat,’ I heard. I didn’t yell. I took out my phone, called 911… and then my daughter mentioned a locked drawer.”
